Calderaro Scores Game-Winner in 79th Minute as Women's Soccer Defeats Le Moyne, 1-0
Box Score SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2015) – Powered by a game-winning goal in the 79th minute from freshman Lauren Calderaro (La Verne, Calif./Bonita) off an assist from senior Jessica DeLeon (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC), the Mercy College women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory on the road over Le Moyne College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mavericks pick up their first win of 2015 and improve to 1-1-1, while the Dolphins fall to 1-3.
Calderaro concluded the afternoon with a team-high three shots on goal, while DeLeon, sophomore Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif./South Hills) and freshman Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) also recorded a shot on goal. Senior goalkeeper Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), aided by a strong effort from the Mavericks backline, faced zero shots on goal to earn the shutout win.
Kirsten Colegrove and Kelly Ristoff each fired a pair of shots to lead Le Moyne, while goalkeeper Tori Corsaro made five saves in taking the loss.
The contest featured few scoring opportunities for either team as the two teams combined for only five shots in the first half, with four coming from Mercy.
The Mavericks forced Corsaro to make three saves in the opening frame and took five corners, but were unable to breakthrough as the two teams headed into halftime scoreless.
The second half saw the Dolphins come out with the first three shots of the period, but were not able to put them on net. Mercy would respond with the next four shots of the game, including a DeLeon shot that was stopped by Corsaro in the 71st minute.
The Mavericks continued to apply pressure to the Le Moyne backline when at the 78:14 mark DeLeon set up for a corner and freshman Kendall Wright (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) fired a shot that was blocked. However, the ensuing play saw Calderaro take a pass off the foot of DeLeon from the right endline and fire it from the right corner of the goal box past Corsaro to give Mercy a 1-0 lead at the 78:40 mark.
A late offensive push by the Dolphins would be turned away by the Mavericks backline and Mercy came away with the shutout road win.
The Mavericks held a 10-6 margin in shots on the afternoon and a 9-3 edge in corners to seal the win.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks will look to build off the win as they host Nyack College on Saturday, September 19th at 12 p.m.
