Johnson Finishes With 11 Kills as Volleyball Hosts Daemen and Bentley

Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2015) – Despite a team-high 11 kills on the day from sophomore Sa'Naya Johnson (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a, 3-0 (20-25, 22-25, 21-25) decision to East Coast Conference (ECC) foe Daemen College before falling to Bentley University, 3-0 (18-25, 13-25, 21-25) on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (4-10, 0-2 ECC) remain winless in ECC play, while Bentley (8-4) defeated Daemen (6-7, 1-0 ECC) in straight sets in the other match of the day.
Also, contributing for Mercy was junior Andrea Velasco (Whittier, Calif./Rio Hondo College) who finished with nine kills and nine digs, while freshman Eva Marie Lynch (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall) chipped in eight kills and ten blocks. Freshman Brianna Heffernan (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) accumulated five kills and 14 digs and freshman Toni Parente (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) capped off the day with 20 assists.
The Wildcats were led by Ashley Drzymala who had 16 kills and seven digs.
Shannon Kelly paced the Falcons with 10 kills and nine digs.
Daemen 3, Mercy 0
The opening match of the day saw the Mavericks jump out to an early 11-9 lead in the opening set, forcing a Daemen timeout. However, the Wildcats clawed their way back and went on an 8-2 run after the score was tied at 13-13 to build a 21-15 advantage. Mercy responded with four unanswered to get within two, 21-19, but the visitors would close the set on a 4-1 spurt to take a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks got off to an 11-5 start in the second set to force another Daemen timeout and would lead 22-18 late in the frame before the Wildcats finished off the set on a 7-0 run to build a 2-0 advantage.
The final set of the match saw Mercy take a 10-7 lead following a Johnson kill, but Daemen fought back with four of the next five points to even things up at 11-11. The two teams would trade the lead later in the set before the Wildcats built a late 22-19 edge. The Mavericks were able to make it 22-21, but the guests scored three straight to close out the set and match.
Johnson ended the match with a team-high five kills and eight blocks, while Lynch had four kills and seven blocks.
Bentley 3, Mercy 0
The final match of the afternoon saw the Falcons get off to a quick 15-6 start before Mercy responded with eight points in a row to make it 15-14. Bentley would build the lead back up to five, 20-15, before the Mavericks tallied three of the next four points to get within three, 21-18. However, the Falcons closed the frame on a 4-0 spurt to take the first set.
The visitors built a 16-8 lead in the second set and would not look back in taking a 2-0 lead.
Mercy took a 17-11 lead in the third set and looked to be on the verge of forcing a fourth set but Bentley came back with a 9-1 run to build a 20-18 advantage. Following a Lynch kill and service ace, the two teams were tied at 20-20, forcing a Falcons timeout. Bentley would come out of the timeout with five of the final six points to close out the match.
Johnson and Velasco finished with a team-high six kills and Lynch had four kills and three blocks. Freshman Kaila Berlovan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) ended the match with a team-high 11 digs and Parente dished out a team-high 14 assists.
Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks will look to bounce back as they travel to Dowling on Tuesday, September 29th for a 7:30 p.m. first serve.
