Calderaro Scores as Women's Soccer Hosts Roberts Wesleyan in ECC Battle
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2015) – Freshman Lauren Calderaro (La Verne, Calif./Bonita) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year as the Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to East Coast Conference (ECC) foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-2-1, 1-1 ECC) see their three-game winning streak come to an end, while the Redhawks (5-1-1, 2-0 ECC) have now won three straight.
Calderaro ended the game with two shots on goal, while senior Jessica DeLeon (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC) had a team-high four shots. Senior goalkeeper Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) made three saves in taking the loss.
Bella Mitrevski led the way for Roberts Wesleyan with two goals, while Mary Kate Eckert made four saves to pick up the win.
The two teams combined for few scoring opportunities, but the Redhawks were able to capitalize on two chances early to take a 2-0 lead just under 20 minutes in. Following a Mercy foul, Mitrevski took a direct kick from just outside the box and fired it past Augustine to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
Mitrevski would waste little time in getting her second of the day as she took a pass from Taylor Fletcher that found its way over the defense and fired the ball into the right corner to put the Redhawks up 2-0 at the 17-minute mark.
Despite being down by two goals, the Mavericks would continue to fight and Calderaro got Mercy within one as she rocketed a shot from outside the box that found its way past Eckert to make it 2-1.
Roberts Wesleyan would head into halftime up 2-1 and with a 6-4 edge in shots.
The second stanza saw the Mavericks outshoot the Redhawks 8-3, but they were unable to find the equalizer as Eckert made three saves in the frame to preserve the win.
Mercy ended the game with a 12-9 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks will look to bounce back as they travel to Bridgeport on Wednesday, September 30th for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
