DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2015) – Graduate student Juan Gatti (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Monroe CC) scored a goal in the 81st minute, but that was not enough as the Mercy College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 non-conference decision to Bloomfield College on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (4-5) see their two-game winning streak come to a halt and drop their first home game of the year, while the Bears (5-2-2) have won three straight.

Gatti finished the contest with a team-high two shots on goal, while graduate student Junior Sanguina (Valhalla, N.Y./SUNY Purchase) and junior Gonzalo Prando (Jefferson Valley, N.Y./Lakeland) each recorded a shot on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Robert Retnauer (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) took the loss in his second start of the year.

Bloomfield was led by Shaunavon DeSouza who finished with both Bears goals. Goalkeeper Jovan Stanojkovic made three saves in picking up his first win of the year.

The visitors from New Jersey got off to a quick start as they scored in just the 8th minute of action as DeSouza took a throughball from Shacquille Brown and flipped it over the keeper to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead.

That would be the only goal of the half as the two teams combined for only eight shots with Bloomfield maintaining a 6-2 edge.

The second half saw the Mavericks come out with a pair of shots, but the Bears would get on the board first in the frame as DeSouza struck again in the 61st minute off a pass from Paulo Claudio to make it 2-0.

Gatti would get Mercy on the board in the 81st minute on a penalty kick after being taken down inside the box. The graduate student found the lower left corner of the net for his third of the year and cut the Bloomfield lead to 2-1.

The Mavericks came right back with a late offensive push, started by a Sanguina shot that hit the post, but were unable to find the equalizer as Stanojkovic stepped up with a pair of key saves to help seal the win for the Bears.

Mercy held a 12-10 edge in shots on the day, while corner kicks were even at 4-4.

Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will look to bounce back as they return to ECC play with a road matchup against District of Columbia on Saturday, October 3rd at 2 p.m.
