WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Sept. 5, 2015) – Despite freshman Cassidy Campe (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) recording her first collegiate goal in the 79th minute, the No. 14 Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to the University of New Haven in their season opener on Saturday night as Kayo Field.

The defending ECC champions drop their season opener for the first time since 2011, while the Chargers improve to 2-0 after the victory.

Campe finished with a game-high three shots on goal, while junior Abigail Littleton (Simi Valley, Calif./Ventura College) and sophomore Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif./South Hills) each fired a pair of shots. Senior Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) made the start in goal and made six saves in taking the loss.

Marisa Garcia led the way for New Haven with a pair of goals and goalkeeper Deandra Nash stopped seven shots in coming away with the victory.

New Haven, after earning a 1-0 victory over Georgian Court on Thursday, came out on the attack right out of the gate as Augustine had to make her first save of the game just 40 seconds in. The Mavericks showed their first game jitters as the Chargers got on the board early in the 12th minute as Sierra Stein took a through ball from Carlie Schecht and touched it past Augustine to take a 1-0 lead.

The home team would continue to apply the pressure, forcing Augustine to make three more saves until Garcia netted her first of the night in the 37th minute as she took a rebound and sent it in the lower left corner to give New Haven a 2-0 advantage.

The score remained 2-0 heading into halftime with the Chargers controlling the action with an 11-1 shot advantage in the opening half.

The Mavericks came out on the aggressive to begin the second half as Littleton and redshirt freshman Ileen Mejia (Whittier, Calif./La Mirada) forced Nash to make a pair of saves less than three minutes into the frame. Despite the aggressiveness, Mercy would not be able to find the back of the net and New Haven added on to its lead in the 70th minute as Garcia tallied her second of the day and gave the Chargers a commanding 3-0 lead.

Campe finally got the Mavericks on the board in the 79th minute off a direct kick from 24 yards out, but despite a last minute surge New Haven would hold on for the victory.

The Mavericks were able to get in more of an offensive groove in the second half as they outshot the Chargers 11-4 in the second half.

Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks will look to bounce back as they have their home opener against Saint Anselm on Tuesday, September 8th at 3 p.m.
