WORCESTER, Mass. (Sept. 6, 2015) – Freshman Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) recorded her first collegiate goal in her debut and freshman goalkeeper Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made an impressive 25 saves, but that was not enough as the Mercy College field hockey team opened its 2015 season with a 5-1 loss to Assumption College on Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks begin the season 0-1, while the Greyhounds get their first win of the year after dropping their season opener.

Williams finished with Mercy's lone shot on goal, while junior Vanessa Soler (Port Monmouth, N.J./Middletown North) assisted on the goal. Amell got the start and played all 70 minutes, facing 47 shots. Junior Jen Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) added a pair of defensive saves to lead Mercy on the defensive end.

Assumption used a balanced attack as five different players scored and goalkeeper Sarah Bodzinski faced one shot in earning the win.

The home team got off to a great start as they found the back of the cage 25 seconds in as Meghan Sullivan fired a shot from 10 yards out that gave the Greyhounds a very early 1-0 lead.

Assumption added on a goal in the 11th minute as Kiley Colucci scored off a penalty corner taken by Andrea Koslowski to make it 2-0. The Greyhounds tacked on a pair of goals late in the half to make it 4-0 heading into the intermission.

After a scoreless opening five minutes of the second half, the Mavericks would get on the board as Williams took a pass from Soler and shot it from the top of the circle to cut the deficit to 4-1.

Assumption tallied a goal in the 48th minute to end the scoring and held on for the victory.

Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks will look to get in the win column as they return to Dobbs Ferry for their home opener on Wednesday, September 9th against Pace University at 4 p.m.
