Goodson Nearly Records Double-Double as Women's Basketball Plays at UDC
Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 16, 2016) – Despite a near double-double from senior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y./SUNYIT) and 11 points from sophomore Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 69-46 decision to the University of the District of Columbia in ECC action on Saturday afternoon at the UDC Sports Complex.
The Mavericks (4-11, 1-7 ECC) have now dropped two in a row, while the Firebirds (13-3, 8-0 ECC) remain undefeated in ECC play and have won 11 straight overall.
Goodson finished with 14 points and nine rebounds on 7-of-10 shooting with two blocks, while Clark contributed 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn./Saint Bernard) added nine points and seven rebounds.
Leading UDC was Taj Baldwin-Kollore who scored a game-high 16 points with five steals.
Mercy faced an uphill battle taking on one of the hottest teams in the country, but the Mavericks held strong with the Firebirds as they took a 16-12 lead with 2:33 left in the first quarter after a Sullivan three-pointer. The two teams would head to the second quarter with the score tied at 16-16.
The Mavericks began the second quarter with the first two points to take a two-point lead and they looked to be up for the challenge. However, the Firebirds came back on a 14-0 run to take a double-digit lead and would not trail again.
UDC took a 32-20 lead into halftime as the Mavericks could only muster four points in the frame.
Mercy was able to cut the deficit to eight on a few occasions in the third quarter, but the Firebirds ended the frame on a 16-6 run to build the lead up to 20 after three quarters of play.
The Mavericks opened up the fourth with four straight looking to make a comeback, but UDC put an end to any hopes of one with a 4-0 run to up the lead back up to 20 points and cruised the rest of the way.
Mercy shot 43.2 percent (19-of-44) from the field, while UDC connected on 47.3 percent (26-of-55) of their attempts. Mercy held a 32-31 edge on the glass, but were undone by 29 turnovers that led to the Firebirds holding a 32-10 edge in points off turnovers.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks will look to get back in the win column as they host Dowling on Wednesday, January 20th at the Westchester County Center at 5 p.m.
