Goodson Finishes With Season-High 30 Points and 16 Rebounds as Women's Basketball Defeats Dowling, 84-76, at the Westchester County Center
Box Score WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (Jan. 20, 2016) – Senior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y./SUNYIT) was able to record her eleventh double-double of the season before halftime tonight as the Mercy College women's basketball team took down fellow ECC competitor Dowling College in an exciting 84-76 victory on Wednesday evening at the Westchester County Center.
With the win, the Mavericks have improved to 5-11 overall and 2-7 in the East Coast Conference. The Golden Lions now fall to 2-13 and are 2-7 in conference play. Mercy picks up their first win in the series since the 2009-10 season and are off to their best nine-game start in ECC play since the 2010-11 season.
Tonight, Goodson stole the show recording a game-high and season-high 30 points on impressive 13-of-16 shooting, and a game high 16 rebounds. Goodson also contributed five blocks, two assists, and one steal. Freshman Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) also had a stand out night, as she scored a season high 19 points along with recording a game-high seven assists. Sophomore Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn./Saint Bernard) finished the night scoring a total of 12 points, all on three pointers.
For the Lions, Krstina Surlan led the pack recording a double-double tonight as she finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Kamille Ejerta was not far behind, scoring a total of 20 points, while contributing four assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
The Mavericks came out on fire in the first quarter with Goodson starting off the game with a made layup at the 9:42 mark. By the end of the first quarter, Goodson had already recorded eight points and six rebounds. Sullivan also had a stand out quarter as she went 3-of-4 from the three point line and finished the quarter with nine points in just eight minutes of play. The Mavericks entered the second quarter with a 61.1 percent field goal percentage and held a 27-18 advantage.
Once again, Mercy entered the second quarter ready to play. Just fifteen seconds into the period Bady sunk a three point shot to bring the Mavericks to a 30-18 advantage. Ejerta answered back for the Golden Lions when she made a layup at the 7:15 mark to bring the score to 30-22. Sophomore Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) quickly brought Mercy back into the offensive mindset when she capitalized on a three point play after being fouled by the Golden Lions to up the lead back to double figures. Goodson scored three unanswered layups with 1:53 left bringing the score to 44-27 and Mercy would head into the locker rooms up 44-29.
The Golden Lions saw their best quarter occur in the third quarter. Ejerta was the first to score in the quarter at the 9:49 mark, followed by a made jump shot by teammate Jasmine Sapp. Junior Paxton Reddington (Holmdel, N.J./Brookdale CC) quickly answered back by sinking a three point shot to bring the score to 47-33. The Golden Lions would outscore the Mavericks 22-19 in the third quarter, but Mercy entered the fourth quarter holding a 63-51 advantage.
The fourth quarter started out slow for the Mavericks, as Surlan led the Golden Lions with five unanswered points in the first two minutes of the quarter. Bady was able to sink a three point shot at the 7:51 mark to bring the score to 66-56. Goodson let loose in the fourth quarter, scoring a total of 12 points and recording three rebounds. The Golden Lions outscored Mercy 25-21 in the fourth quarter, however it was not enough as the Mavericks earned the win.
The 84 points on 46.2 percent shooting are both season highs for Mercy, while the Golden Lions shot 44.1 percent from the floor. The Mavericks went 11-of-28 from downtown and went 13-of-14 from the charity stripe.
