The Mavericks entered today's contest looking to win their third straight conference game for the first time since the 1999-00 season, but faced a tall task in taking on a Knights squad that was one of the hottest teams in the ECC.
Goodson opened up the scoring at the 9:18 mark to give Mercy their first and only lead of the game as the hosts responded with a 15-1 run to take a 15-3 lead at the 4:09 mark. The Knights built the advantage to 14, 21-7, after a pair of Madison Rowland free throws, but a Goodson layup and Perez trifecta helped cut the deficit to 10, 22-12, after one quarter.
The Mavericks began the scoring in the second stanza with a Goodson jumper to trim the deficit to single digits, 22-14. However, Queens ensued with a 9-2 run to increase the lead back to 15, 31-16, with 6:44 left before half. The Knights would head into the intermission up 38-23 following a Melissa Fumano jumper right before the buzzer.
The second half saw Mercy begin the period with five unanswered as Goodson nailed a jumper and Perez knocked down another three to cut the Queen lead to 38-28 early in the third. The Knights ended any threat of a further comeback as they closed the frame on a 15-4 run to build a 53-32 lead after three quarters of play.
Mercy scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to get within 16, 53-37, with six minutes left, but could not get any closer as the Knights came away with the victory.
The Mavericks shot just 25.9 percent (15-of-58) on the day, while the Knights made 35.3 percent (24-of-68) of their attempts. Queens held a 60-34 edge on the glass which they turned into a 26-4 edge in second chance points. The Knights also held a 42-16 advantage in points in the paint.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks look to bounce back as they host LIU Post on Wednesday, February 3rd at the Westchester County Center with tip-off set for 5 p.m.
