Heffernan Finishes With 27 Digs and Olson Adds 19 Kills as Volleyball Faces Saint Anselm and AIC

Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 1, 2016) – Despite 19 kills from sophomore Peyton Olson (Albany, Ore./West Albany) and 27 digs from sophomore Brianna Heffernan (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 23-25) decision to Saint Anselm College before falling to the hosts American International College, 3-0 (15-25, 13-25, 26-28) on Saturday afternoon at Butova Gym.
The Mavericks (1-8) fail to build off their win over Molloy on Thursday, while Saint Anselm (12-1) beat American International (14-4) in the first match of the day.
Olson also added ten digs, while senior Andrea Velasco (Whittier, Calif./Rio Hondo College) had 11 kills and 13 digs on the day. Sophomore Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) added 45 assists and 14 digs and sophomore Leah Petty (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Academy) chipped in 11 kills.
Saint Anselm was led by Katy Teets who had a team high 10 kills.
American International was guided by Marley D'Amore Morrison who had a match high 17 kills.
Saint Anselm 3, Mercy 0
The opening set of the match saw the Mavericks score first on a Petty kill, but the Hawks followed with three straight points and would not trail again in the set. Saint Anselm built the lead to 21-13 before Mercy closed the deficit to 23-19. The Hawks put away the set with two straight points to take a 1-0 lead.
Petty started the second set with a kill, but Saint Anselm came back with an 8-3 run to take an 8-4 lead. The Mavericks cut the Hawks lead to just two on several occasions, but the Hawks finished off the set with three straight points after the score was 22-19 to take a 2-0 advantage.
The final set of the match saw Mercy jump out to an 11-4 lead following kills from Olson and Velasco. The Mavericks held a 13-9 lead midway through the set before Saint Anselm battled back and closed the set with two straight points to seal the win.
Olson finished with a match high 13 kills, while Heffernan added 11 digs. Petty ended up with eight kills and Runge dished out 28 assists.
American International 3, Mercy 0
The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the opening set of the match before the Yellow Jackets followed with ten of the next 12 points to take a 10-3 lead. American International would cruise the rest of the way to take a 1-0 lead.
The second stanza saw the Mavericks get on the board first, but the hosts responded with 11 straight points and would not look back in taking a 2-0 advantage.
Mercy battled in the final set of the match, taking a 14-9 lead following a kill by Petty. American International responded by taking an 18-16 lead, but the Mavericks had one last run in them and retook the lead built it to 23-19. Mercy looked to be on the verge of taking a set, but the Yellow Jackets came back with a 6-1 run to take a 25-24 lead. American International served for match point but an attack error kept the Mavericks alive and Olson followed with a kill to give Mercy a set point situation. The Yellow Jackets regrouped and rattled off three unanswered points to take the match.
Olson slammed home a team high six kills and added six digs. Heffernan brought up 16 digs and Runge dished out 17 assists.
Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks look to get back in the win column when they play at LIU Post on Thursday, October 6th at 7 p.m.
