PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Oct. 12, 2016) – Powered by the game-winning goal from redshirt sophomore Ileen Mejia (Whittier, Calif./La Mirada) in the 44th minute and five saves from junior Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Holy Family University in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Field.

The Mavericks (9-3) have won eight of their last nine games and are now 7-0 in true road games, while the Tigers (6-6-1) have dropped three games in a row. Mercy with the win surpasses their win total from last season with five games still left in the season.

Mejia recorded her second goal of the season and had a team high four shots on goal, while junior Alyssa Iannuzzi (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) picked up her first assist of the season. Price made five saves to earn the shutout victory and move to 8-3 on the year in net.

Holy Family received a game high five shots from Brianna Rock, while goalkeeper Sienna Smith made five saves to take the loss.

The opening half saw shots tied at 6-6, but the Tigers forced Price to make three saves in the period. The game remained scoreless until the 44th minute when Iannuzzi sent a pass from inside the box over to Mejia who fired it into the back of the net to make it 1-0, heading into halftime.

Holy Family opened up the second half with two shots hitting the post in the opening 11 minutes of action, but were unable to capitalize. Mercy looked to add on an insurance goal but three shots from Mejia and another by sophomore Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) were stopped by Smith to keep the score at 1-0 in the 77th minute.

The Tigers came back looking for the equalizer but Price was up to the challenge and stopped two shots in the final 12 minutes, including one in the final minute, to preserve the win.

Holy Family held a 15-11 edge in shots on the day, while corner kicks were tied at 2-2.

Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks look to earn their tenth win of the season when they play at Queens College on Saturday, October 15th at 12 p.m.
