Corral Records Third Goal of Season as Men's Soccer Earns 1-1 Tie at Queens
Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2016) – Freshman Santiago Corral (Buenos Aires, Argentina / Instituto Francesco Faa Di Bruno) scored his third goal of the season, as the Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with Queens College in East Coast Conference (ECC) action on Saturday afternoon at Queens College Soccer Field.
The Mavericks pick up their third tie of the season as their record stands at 7-3-3 and 2-3-2 in the ECC. The Knights collect their fourth tie of the season, as their record is now 4-5-4 overall and 1-2-2 in the ECC.
The first half of the match saw non-stop action from both sides of the field. Coming out strong for Mercy was sophomore Lucca Lacerda (Passos, Brazil / Monroe College), who was able to fire off a shot in the first 14 seconds of play. Answering back for the Knights was Emgi Gousse who recorded a shot for Queens but it was wide to the left.
The next 27 minutes were a battle, as the Mavericks fired off five shots and the Knights had three shots before Corral was able to find the back of the goal for the Mavericks. Corral was able to dribble to the left and connect at the opposite side of the net to put the Mavericks on the board.
Mercy was able to hold their 1-0 lead for eleven minutes of play until Najib Ullah put the Knights on the board before the end of the first half. Nikolas Maher and Vincent Companion were both able to record assists off of the goal. Mercy and Queens entered the intermission tied 1-1.
The second stanza saw the action go back-and-forth with both teams taking shots, but neither could put a shot on target and the score remained 1-1 headed into the first overtime.
The first overtime saw little to no action, as both the Mavericks and the Knights were unable to record a shot during the ten minutes of play. The Knights had a corner kick in the 97th minute but were unable to capitalize, resulting in a second overtime period.
The second overtime saw two shots and two corner kicks for Mercy, along with three shots and two corner kicks for the Knights. However, neither team was able to score and had to settle for a tie.
For the Mavericks, Junior Kwantarian Van der Lara (Conway, Ark. / Conway (Marshalltown CC) played a full 110 minutes and recorded two saves. For the Knights, James Brostowski also saw a full 110 minutes and had three saves.
The Mavericks ended the afternoon with a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Compared to the Knights, who finished the afternoon holding a 20-14 advantage in shots.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, Oct. 22 when they will travel to Molloy College to take on the Lions at 3:00 pm.
