Calderaro and Mejia Score as Women's Soccer Earns 10th Win of Season With 2-0 Victory at Queens
Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2016) – Led by a goal and an assist from sophomore Lauren Calderaro (La Verne, Calif. / Bonita HS) and one goal from redshirt sophomore Ileen Mejia (Whittier, Calif. / La Mirada HS), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over Queens College on Saturday afternoon at Queens College Soccer Field.
The Mavericks (10-3, 5-1 ECC) improve to 8-0 in true road games with the victory. The Knights (3-9-1, 1-3-1 ECC) have now dropped their last two games.
Calderaro scored her second goal of the season today while Mejia was able to improve her goal count to three. Calderaro, freshman Dominique Banks (San Diego, Calif. / Helix Charter HS), and junior Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif. / South Hills) each added an assist for the win. Banks, Serna, and freshman Jessica Brandt (Folsom, Calif. / Folsom HS) also recorded shots on goal for the Mavericks. Junior Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz. / Millennium) made one save for the win.
Queens was led by Maya Emme, who recorded one shot and one shot on goal. Haley Gibbons and Erin Vernillo both also recorded shots in the contest. Nicole Cranny played a full 90-minutes in the net and saved three shots for the loss.
The Mavericks came out on fire in the first half, recording four shots before Calderaro was able to score off of a header to the left side from Banks and Serna. It wasn't until the 31st minute that the Knights were able to have a presence offensively, when Emme was able to fire shot on goal that was saved by Price.
Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the half. Mercy headed into the intermission with a 1-0 lead.
The second stanza saw the Knights come out with a sense of urgency, as Gibbons took the first shot of the half less than one minute into play. It wasn't until ten minutes passed that Mercy was able to take another shot when Brandt fired one on goal but Cranny was in position for the save.
Mercy was able to control the remainder of the half, taking three shots and two corner kicks before Mejia was eventually able to score in the 77th minute off of an assist from Calderaro. The Knights continued to fight as they were able to take another shot on goal but they could not get on the board as Mercy earned the shutout win.
The Mavericks held a 14-4 advantage in shots, along with a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks look to build off the win as they host New Haven on Tuesday, Oct. 18th for a 3:00 pm start.
