Olson Finishes With 28 Kills and Heffernan Adds 26 Digs as Volleyball Hosts Daemen and Saint Anselm

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2016) – Despite 28 kills from sophomore Peyton Olson (Albany, Ore./West Albany) and 26 digs from sophomore Brianna Heffernan (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (12-25, 17-25, 16-25) decision to ECC foe Daemen College before falling to Saint Anselm College, 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 25-20, 12-25, 12-15) in Breast Cancer Awareness games on Saturday afternoon at Victory Gymnasium.

The Mavericks (2-11, 1-5 ECC) fail to build off their win from last Saturday, while Daemen (14-6, 6-1 ECC) defeated Saint Anselm (15-4) in five sets in the second match of the day.

Olson added 12 digs on the day, while sophomore Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) dished out 43 assists and brought up 20 digs. Senior Andrea Velasco (Whittier, Calif./Rio Hondo College) chipped in 13 kills and 11 digs and junior Sa'Naya Johnson (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) contributed nine kills.

Daemen was led by Ashley Drzymala who had 17 kills.

Saint Anselm was paced by Catherine McCarthy who had a match-high-tying 17 kills.

Daemen 3, Mercy 0

The opening set of the match saw the Wildcats jump out to a 10-5 lead. The Mavericks cut the deficit to 10-6 after an attack error, but Daemen responded with six straight points to increase the lead to 16-6. The Wildcats led the rest of the way in taking a 1-0 lead.

Mercy jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set of the match and led 5-3 following back-to-back kills from Olson and sophomore Leah Petty (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Academy). The Wildcats battled back to even the score up at 14-14 before an Olson kill gave the lead back to the Mavericks at 15-14. Daemen would close the set on an 11-2 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The final set of the match saw the Wildcats hold a 10-9 lead following a kill by Velasco, before Daemen responded with nine unanswered points to distance themselves from Mercy in taking the set and match.

Olson finished with a team high 11 kills, while Heffernan added a team high nine digs. Runge dished out 17 assists and had eight digs, while Velasco slammed home five kills.

Saint Anselm 3, Mercy 2

After dropping a straight-set match to the Hawks at American International two weeks ago, the Mavericks would give Saint Anselm all they could handle. The opening set saw the teams trade points to begin the frame before the Hawks took the lead for good with three straight points. Mercy would cut the deficit to two, 13-11, following a Heffernan ace, but Saint Anselm would rattle off five of the next seven points to take an 18-13. The Hawks kept their distance from the Mavericks the rest of the set to take a 1-0 lead.

Saint Anselm jumped out to a 9-7 lead in set two before Mercy ensued with five straight points to take a 12-9 lead following a kill from Velasco. The Hawks got within two, 14-12, but the Mavericks would come back with eight of the next ten points to build a 22-14 advantage they would keep in tying up the match at 1-1.

The third set saw the visitors score the first two points before Mercy followed with a 10-3 run to build a 10-5 lead. Saint Anselm once again cut the deficit to two, 22-20, late before the Mavericks closed the set with three straight points to take a 2-1 lead.

The Hawks jumped out to a 14-2 lead in set four and did not look back in evening up the match at 2-2.

The final set of the day saw the Mavericks get off to a 5-3 lead, but the Hawks followed with three straight points to take a 6-5 lead. Mercy score two more unanswered to take back the lead at 7-6. However, Saint Anselm would go on a 7-1 run to take a 13-8 lead. The Mavericks fought hard and score three straight to cut the deficit to two, 13-11, but the Hawks put the match away by scoring two of the next three points.

Olson had a match-high-tying 17 kills, while Heffernan added 17 digs. Runge dished out 26 assists and had 12 digs. Velasco slammed home eight kills and had nine digs.

Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks look to bounce back when they host Roberts Wesleyan tomorrow at 12 p.m.
