DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2016) – Despite nine saves from sophomore Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to Bellarmine University in an ECAC matchup and Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (4-9, 1-4 ECAC) fail to build off their win on Thursday, while the Knights (8-5, 3-2 ECAC) have won three of their last four games.

Senior Jackie Ballin (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino) recorded a team high three shots on goal for Mercy, while sophomore Kayly Bryan (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) also added a shot on goal.

Bellarmine was led by Elle Lichte who scored both goals, while Merit Harris and Dana Hemingway added assists. Goalkeeper Heather Gregory made three saves in earning the victory.

After falling 8-0 at Bellarmine just a few weeks ago, the Mavericks held their own today against the Knights. Following a scoreless 14 minutes of action, the Knights were able to get on the board in the 15th minute after Lichte scored off an assist from Harris following a blocked shot.

The Mavericks would force Gregory to make two saves in the half, but were unable to get on the board and the score remained 1-0 in favor of Bellarmine heading into halftime.

The second half saw the Knights come out with six shots on goal to begin the half, but Amell stopped all six to keep the score at 1-0. Bellarmine would add on an insurance goal in the 58th minute when Hemingway attempted to take a shot that was deflected in by Lichte, making it 2-0.

Mercy came back on the offensive but a save by Gregory and a defensive save by Mary Ringwald kept the Mavericks off the board and the Knights would escape with a 2-0 victory.

Bellarmine held a 15-6 edge in shots and a 21-12 advantage in penalty corners.

Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mavericks resume action on Monday, October 17th when they host Lindenwood in an ECAC matchup at 1 p.m.
