Ballin Scores as Field Hockey Hosts ECAC Foe Lindenwood
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2016) – Despite a goal from senior Jackie Ballin (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to ECAC foe Lindenwood University on Monday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-10, 1-5 ECAC) have now dropped two games in a row, while the Lions (10-3, 4-1 ECAC) have earned two straight wins.
Ballin recorded her fourth goal of the season on three shots on goal. Sophomore Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made the start in the cage and played the first 23:09 with five saves before giving way to sophomore Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) who played the remainder of the contest and made five stops.
Lindenwood received two goals and an assist from Maroussia Buysschaert, while Nicole Johnston and Graycen Dave also added goals. Goalkeeper Skylar Starbeck made the start in net and played the first half, making two saves. Mackenzie Litterst played the second half in goal and made four saves.
The Lions wasted little time on getting on the board as Johnston scored in the 4th minute, off an assist from Buysschart, following a penalty corner to make it 1-0. The Mavericks drew a penalty stroke just under three minutes later but senior Jen Wandle's (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) attempt went wide and the score remained 1-0.
Amell made two more saves before Buysschaert scored her first goal of the game after firing a shot from in front of the cage, making it 2-0 in the 20th minute. The Lions added on another goal in the 23rd minute as Dave scored, off a feed from Johnston, following a Lindenwood penalty corner to make it 3-0. The score remained 3-0 at halftime with the Lions holding an 8-3 edge in shots.
The second half saw Pettit make four saves in the first ten minutes of the half before Buysschaert scored her final goal of the game in the 46th minute to give Lindenwood a 4-0 lead.
The Mavericks forced Litterst to make four saves in the second before Ballin scored on a penalty stroke in the 67th minute to make it 4-1. The Lions would hold on for the victory as they held a 16-11 edge in shots, while Mercy maintained a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 19th when they host Southern Connecticut State at 4 p.m.
