Olson Records Team-High Five Kills as Volleyball Plays at ECC Foe Bridgeport
Box Score BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Oct. 20, 2016) – Sophomore Peyton Olson (Albany, Ore./West Albany) finished with a team-high five kills and a team-high-tying eight digs as the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (16-25, 12-25, 15-25) decision to the University of Bridgeport in ECC action on Thursday night at Hubbell Gym.
The Mavericks (3-12, 2-6 ECC) drop both meetings to the Purple Knights (11-9, 8-1 ECC) this season, who have won two matches in a row.
Olson also added two assists, while sophomore Brianna Heffernan (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) added a team-high-tying eight digs. Sophomore Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) contributed 13 assists and three kills and sophomore Leah Petty (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Academy) recorded four kills.
Bridgeport was led by Sara Cruz who had a match-high 11 kills along with five digs. Amelie Guinci produced a match-high 15 digs and Elle Rich dished out a match-high 27 assists.
The opening set of the match saw the Mavericks open up a 12-10 lead following a kill by Olson. However, the Purple Knights responded with a 6-0 run to take a 16-12 lead and would lead the rest of the way in taking a 1-0 lead.
Mercy took an early 2-1 lead in set two after an ace by senior Andrea Velasco (Whittier, Calif./Rio Hondo College), but Bridgeport followed with a 13-5 run to take a 14-7 advantage. The Mavericks cut the deficit to six, 17-11, before the Purple Knights ended the set with eight of the final nine points to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
Bridgeport scored the first six points of the third set before Mercy battled back and cut the Purple Knights lead to just one, 12-11. Bridgeport built the lead back up to three, 16-13, before ending the set and match on a 9-2 run to secure the win.
Mercy hit -.045 on the night with 19 kills and 28 digs, while Bridgeport hit .347 with 35 kills and 44 digs.
Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 22nd when they play at Bloomfield College for a tri-match with Goldey-Beacom College beginning at 2 p.m.
