Three Mavericks Score as Field Hockey Celebrates Senior Day With 4-1 Victory Over Molloy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2016) – Powered by two goals from senior Jackie Ballin (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino) and goals from senior Randi Zorn (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and sophomore Angela Robbins (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional), the Mercy College field hockey team celebrated Senior Day with a 4-1 victory over Molloy College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

In a ceremony prior to the game, Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mercy athletic department recognized the careers of Ballin, Zorn, Vanessa Soler (Port Monmouth, N.J./Middletown North, Olivia Kelleher (Laureldale, N.J./Cedar Creek), Olivia Anderson (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) and Jen Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point).

The Mavericks (6-10) have won two games in a row and match their win total from last season, while the Lions (1-11) have dropped seven games in a row.

Ballin now leads the team with seven goals, while Zorn scored her first goal of the season. Robbins picked up her second goal of the season and sophomore Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) added an assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made two saves to pick up the win and improve to 4-8 on the year.

Molloy was led by Jackie Jamotta who scored her first goal of the season, while Ellyn Byrnes contributed two defensive saves. Goalkeeper Arianna Ovadia made 16 saves in a losing effort.

After three scoring chances in the first nine minutes of action, the Mavericks were able to get on the board when Zorn received a cross from Williams and put the ball into the cage to make it 1-0.

Mercy forced Ovadia to make two more saves before Ballin scored her first of the day off a feed from Robbins to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute of action, forcing a Molloy timeout.

Out of the timeout, Ballin recorded three shots on goal that were stopped by the Molloy defense before Robbins followed up on a rebound and made it 3-0 Mercy in the 21st minute.

The score remained 3-0 in favor of the Mavericks heading into halftime as Mercy held a 15-0 edge in shots and forced Ovadia to make 10 saves in the frame.

Ballin recorded her second goal of the day in the 60th minute on an unassisted goal to make it 4-0. The Lions got on the board in the 65th minute when Jamotta scored after a stopped shot by Amell to make it 4-1. The score remained 4-1 for the remainder of the contest as the Mavericks held a 27-4 edge in shots and an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mavericks look to make it three wins in a row when they play at Limestone College in an ECAC matchup on Saturday, October 29th at 11 a.m.
