DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2016) – Despite a goal from senior Libby Zelikowitz (Middle Village, N.Y./Francis Lewis) on Senior Day, the Mercy College women's soccer team suffered a 5-1 setback to ECC foe No. 13 University of Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

In a ceremony prior to the game, Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mercy athletic department recognized the careers of seniors Samantha Longo (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) and Zelikowitz.

The Mavericks (12-4-1, 5-2-1 ECC) see their five-game unbeaten streak come to an end, while the Purple Knights (14-3, 8-0 ECC) have won 11 games in a row and conclude ECC play unbeaten. Mercy has secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming ECC Tournament and will play at No. 2 seed LIU Post on Wednesday, November 2nd at 1 p.m. in an ECC Semifinal matchup.

Zelikowitz recorded her first collegiate goal in her final home game as a Maverick, while freshman Dominique Banks (San Diego, Calif./Helix Charter) added an assist. Goalkeeper Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) made four saves to take the loss.

Bridgeport received four goals from Idoia Agirre and Shannon Colligan added another goal.

Mercy faced a tall task in taking on a Purple Knights squad that had scored 39 goals over the last five games against ECC competition and was ranked second in the region. The Mavericks were able to keep Bridgeport off the board until the 16th minute when Colligan fed Agirre a throughball and Agirre fired the ball into the lower right corner to give the Purple Knights a 1-0 lead.

Mercy responded with a great scoring chance in the 18th minute, but a Banks shot hit the crossbar to keep the score at 1-0. Bridgeport scored again in the 26th minute when Colligan fired a shot, after a pass from Hanne Neby, that deflected off Price and rolled into the net to make it 2-0.

Just over a minute later, the Purple Knights tacked on their third goal of the half as Agirre put away a misplay by the goalie. Bridgeport headed into halftime with a 3-0 lead and a 9-3 edge in shots.

The second half saw Agirre score goals in the 52nd and 78th minutes to make it 5-0. Mercy found the back of the net with 39 seconds left as Banks sent a cross to the front of the net and Zelikowitz fired it into the goal to get the Mavericks on the board.

Bridgeport held a 15-11 edge in shots and a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, November 2nd when they play at No. 2 seed LIU Post in an ECC Tournament Semifinal matchup at 1 p.m.
