Pettit Makes Career-High 18 Saves as Field Hockey Plays at Limestone
Box Score GAFFNEY, S.C. (Oct. 29, 2016) – Despite a career-high 18 saves by sophomore Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to Limestone College in an ECAC matchup on Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.
The Mavericks (6-11, 1-6 ECAC) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Saints (10-8, 5-3 ECAC) have won two games in a row. Mercy takes on Newberry College tomorrow in their final ECAC game of the season, needing a win to clinch a berth into the ECAC Tournament. Currently Newberry and Mercy are tied in the standings for the fourth and final spot at 1-6 in the ECAC standings.
Limestone received goals from Cassidy Coates, Hannah Dorignaux, Marina Jozokos, Jette Dieckmann and Veronica Smeltzer. Four different Saints also recorded an assist.
The opening half of the contest saw Pettit make ten saves in the first 32 minutes to keep the game scoreless. Limestone finally broke through in the 33rd minute when Dieckmann scored off an assist from Amy Loder, following a penalty corner, to make it 1-0. The score remained 1-0 as the teams headed into halftime.
Pettit made five more saves in the second half before Jozokos found the back of the cage after an assist from Kate Remley, making it 2-0 in the 50th minute. Dorignaux made it 3-0 in the 55th minute following a goal off a rebound.
The Saints added on two more goals in the 66th and 70th minutes to secure the victory on Senior Day.
Limestone held a 35-0 edge in shots and a 20-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Newberry College at 12 p.m. with the winner securing the final ECAC Tournament spot.
