Iannuzzi Scores as Women's Soccer Hosts ECC Foe LIU Post
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2016) – Despite a goal from junior Alyssa Iannuzzi (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), the Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to ECC foe LIU Post on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (8-3, 4-1 ECC) see their seven-game winning streak come to an end and drop their first ECC game of the year, while the Pioneers (7-2-1, 2-1 ECC) have now won five games in a row.
Iannuzzi scored her third goal of the year and had a team high two shots on goal. Junior Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) made three saves in falling to 7-3 on the year in net.
LIU Post received goals from Gabrielle Clark and Klara Berggren, while goalkeeper Hillevi Eklow made five saves to pick up the win.
In a back-and-forth affair, the Mavericks came out and forced Eklow to make three saves in the first 22 minutes of action. The contest remained scoreless until the 31st minute when Clark received a pass from Alexandra Dencker and fired a shot from outside the box that found its way into the lower right corner of the net, making it 1-0 in favor of the Pioneers.
Price would come up with a save in the 43rd minute to keep the score 1-0 and it would stay 1-0 heading into halftime. The first half saw the Mavericks hold a 6-4 edge in shots and a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The second stanza saw Mercy tie the game up in the 61st minute when Iannuzzi found the back of the net following a scramble in front of the net after a Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif./South Hills) corner kick.
Sophomore Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) immediately followed the goal with a shot on goal, but Eklow was up to the challenge and the score stayed tied at 1-1. The game remained tied late and overtime looked like a possibility, but the Pioneers struck with 56 seconds left in the game to take a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish. Andrea Huntzinger found Bergrren who fired a shot from the right side into the left corner to give LIU Post the win.
The Mavericks finished the day with an 11-10 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks look to get back in the win column when they play at Holy Family University on Wednesday, October 12th at 3:30 p.m.
