Four Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Opens 2016-17 Season at Saint Anselm
Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. (Nov. 12, 2016) – Despite four Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team opened its 2016-17 season with a 99-57 setback to Saint Anselm College on Saturday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gym.
The Mavericks (0-1) fall in Head Coach Jim Harter's debut, while the Hawks (1-0) win their first season opener since the 2014-15 season.
Freshman Caralie Wilson (Gold Coast, Australia/John Paul College) led Mercy with 14 points on 4-for-8 shooting from downtown, while sophomore Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) added 13 points and seven rebounds in her debut. Freshman Holly Sanders (Chicago, Ill./Simeon Career Academy) and junior DaMonae Hargrove (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) each contributed 12 points to round out four Mavericks scoring in double figures. Freshman Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) brought down a team-high eight rebounds and scored four points.
Saint Anselm was led by Emma Daly who had a game-high 27 points on 9-for-13 from beyond the arc. Caitlyn Abela poured in 17 points and Michaela Martin recorded 13 points.
The Mavericks were faced with a challenge in their season opener of taking on a Hawks squad that made the NCAA Tournament in 2015-16. Saint Anselm began the game on a 15-0 run in the first four minutes of action before Hargrove drained a pair of free throws to make it 15-2 with 5:18 left in the first quarter. Mercy cut the deficit to 11, 18-7, following a Wilson trifecta, but Saint Anselm ended the quarter on a 19-5 run to take a 37-12 lead after one quarter of play.
The second quarter saw the hosts open up the period with the first eight points before Wilson got the Mavericks on the board with a three at the 7:20 mark to make it 45-15. Mercy was outscored 22-12 in the second quarter and the Hawks went into halftime with a 59-24 lead.
Saint Anselm continued to impress in the third quarter as they held the Mavericks to just seven points. Mercy closed the game by outscoring the Hawks 26-24 in the fourth quarter, shooting 55.6 percent from the floor in the quarter with Hargrove scoring eight points on 4-for-5 shooting.
The Mavericks shot 27.6 percent (21-for-76) from the floor on the day and 27.3 percent (9-for-33) from downtown. The Hawks shot an efficient 56.3 percent (36-for-64) from the field and 58.6 percent (17-for-29) from beyond the arc. Saint Anselm held a 58-34 edge on the boards and a 16-2 advantage in fastbreak points.
Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks look to pick up their first win tomorrow at Southern New Hampshire at 1 p.m.
