Olson Records Match-High-Tying 12 Kills as Volleyball Plays at ECC Foe Roberts Wesleyan

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Nov. 12, 2016) – Despite a match-high-tying 12 kills from sophomore Peyton Olson (Albany, Ore./West Albany), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (17-25, 12-25, 18-25) decision to Roberts Wesleyan College in an ECC matchup on Saturday afternoon at Voller Athletic Center.

The Mavericks (4-19, 2-11 ECC) fail to sweep the season series with the Redhawks (9-15, 6-8 ECC) who snap a four-match losing streak in their season finale.

Olson added three service aces and three digs, while sophomore Brianna Heffernan (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) contributed ten digs. Sophomore Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) dished out 16 assists and brought up seven digs.

Roberts Wesleyan was led by Alexandre Tahauri who had 12 kills and a match-high 23 digs.

The first set saw the Mavericks take a 2-0 lead after back-to-back attack errors by the Redhawks. Roberts Wesleyan responded with seven unanswered to take a 7-2 lead. The hosts built the lead up to 18-4 and led the rest of the way in taking the opening set.

The Redhawks got off to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but Mercy battled back and cut the deficit to two, 10-8. However, Roberts Wesleyan would end the set on a 15-4 run to take a 2-0 lead.

The Mavericks opened the scoring in the third set and led 5-3 after a Toni Parente (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) ace. The hosts followed with five straight points to take an 8-5 advantage before Mercy was able to tie up the set at 10-10 after a Jessica Berka (Hicksville, N.Y./St. Dominic) ace. Roberts Wesleyan went on an 11-4 run to take a 21-14 lead before the Mavericks got within five, 21-16. The Redhawks closed out the set with four of the next six points to secure the victory.

Mercy hit .038 with 20 kills and 36 digs, while Roberts Wesleyan hit .317 with 45 kills and 60 digs.

Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks conclude their 2016 season tomorrow at Daemen College at 12 p.m.
