Keane-Dawes Pours in Team-High 15 Points as Women's Basketball Plays at Georgian Court
Box Score LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Nov. 19, 2016) – Despite a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds from junior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Midwood), the Mercy College women's basketball team fell to Georgian Court University, 75-61, in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at the Georgian Court Wellness Center.
With the loss, the Mavericks now fall to 0-4. The Lions improve to 2-2 for the season.
Keane-Dawes went 6-for-12 from the floor and added three steals. Next up for the Mavericks were sophomore Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y. /Keystone College) and junior DaMonae Hargrove (White Plains, N.Y. / Maria Regina) who both recorded ten points in the contest. Hall and sophomore Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y. / Francis Lewis) dished out three assists each. Freshman Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn. / Watertown) contributed nine points, six rebounds and led the Mavericks in steals with four.
Georgian Court was led by Jess Placher who had a game-high 27 points, while Alliyah Berger chipped in 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
The Mavericks were the first to get on the board when Hall was able to sink a free throw just 29 seconds into the game. The next two minutes remained scoreless until Jaelyn Tweedy had a solid jumper to put the Lions on the board. Keane-Dawes put the Mavericks back in the lead just ten seconds later with a jumper. The Mavericks continued to fight to gain the lead but were unable to gain control as the first quarter ended with Georgian Court holding a 27-15 lead.
The second quarter saw the Lions get on the board first when Tweedy was able to find the net. The Mavericks answered back when sophomore Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y. / Christ the King) started a six-point run for Mercy to bring the score to 29-21 at the 6:48 mark. Tweedy then began a six point run for the Lions to bring the score to 35-21 with 4:21 left in the quarter. Freshman Holly Sanders (Chicago, Ill. / Simeon Career Academy) awoke the Mercy offense when she sunk a jump shot off a pass from junior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill). Clark followed up with two successful free throws to bring the score to 37-25. A three-point play from Keane-Dawes followed by a successful jump shot would bring the score to 39-30 with Mercy trailing by nine entering halftime.
The Lions were the first on the board in the third quarter when Placher hit a three to start it off. Freshman Caralie Wilson (Gold Coast, Australia / John Paul College) answered back with a three pointer to put the Mavericks on the board after the intermission. Clark followed her lead after Keane-Dawes had her second steal of the game to set Clark up for a successful jumper. A layup from Hall would bring the score to 42-37 and force the Lions to take a timeout with 6:54 on the clock. The Lions would come out from their timeout and score eight points before Keane-Dawes hit a three pointer to bring the score to 50-40. The remainder of the quarter was a back-and-forth battle, ending with the Mavericks trailing 55-49.
Mercy cut the deficit to five, 64-59, with 3:27 left in the fourth quarter, after a three from Keane-Dawes, but the hosts would close the game on an 11-2 run to secure the victory.
The Mavericks shot 29.7 percent (19-for-64) from the floor, while the Lions shot 49.1 percent (28-for-57). Mercy held a 17-12 edge in points off turnovers after forcing 21 Georgian Court turnovers.
Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, November 23rd when they host Mansfield University at Westchester Community College at 3:00 pm.
