Jennings Records Team-High 16 Points as Men's Basketball Plays at Dominican

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (Nov. 19, 2016) – Despite senior Raphael Jennings (Washington, D.C./ASA College) scoring a team-high 16 points, the Mercy College men's basketball team suffered an 82-68 setback to Dominican College at the 5th Annual Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament on Saturday night at the Hennessy Center.

The Mavericks (1-4) drop their third straight game, while the Chargers (4-1) have won three games in a row.

Jennings shot 6-for-10 from the field and added five assists, while graduate student Ryan Hickey (Smithtown, N.Y./Dowling College) added 14 points and nine rebounds. Senior William Robinson (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nyack College) scored 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting and senior Isaiah Cosbert (Queens, N.Y./Sullivan CC) netted nine points.

Dominican was led by Daniel Grant who had a game-high 17 points, while Gerrel Irvin recorded a double-double by way of 15 points and ten rebounds.

Jennings opened up the contest with the Mavericks first four points to give Mercy a 4-2 lead with 17:32 left in the first half. The Mavericks held a 9-8 lead with 14:37 left in the frame after a three-point play by junior Kelvin Howard (Temple Hills, Md./Baltimore City CC). The Chargers responded with a 7-3 run to take their largest lead of the game at that point, 15-12, at the 12:52 mark.

A Hickey trifecta gave the lead back to Mercy with 11:59 left in the half. However, Dominican followed with a 15-3 run to take their largest lead of the half, 30-19, with 8:54 left before halftime. The Mavericks fought back and ended the half on a 22-8 run, capped off by a Hickey three at the buzzer, to give Mercy a 41-38 lead at halftime.

The Mavericks began the second half with four straight points to take their largest lead of the game, 45-38, with 18:45 remaining. After three unanswered points by Dominican, Jennings drained a three to once again give Mercy a seven-point lead, 48-41, with just over 17 minutes left. The Mavericks held a 63-62 advantage with 9:12 left in the game, but the Chargers ended the contest on a 20-5 run to come away with the victory.

Mercy shot 40.0 percent (24-for-60) from the field, while Dominican shot 56.9 percent (29-for-51). The Mavericks held a 37-35 edge on the glass and a 13-10 advantage in second chance points.

Head Coach Dr. Jody King and the Mavericks look to bounce back when they host Berkeley College in their home opener on Tuesday, November 22nd at 7 p.m. at Westchester Community College.
