Bady Scores Game-High-Tying 13 Points as Women's Basketball Hosts Molloy in ECC Opener
Box Score VALHALLA, N.Y. (Nov. 26, 2016) – Despite a game-high-tying 13 points from sophomore Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 70-49 decision to Molloy College in their East Coast Conference (ECC) opener on Saturday afternoon at Westchester Community College.
The Mavericks (1-5, 0-1 ECC) fail to build off their win on Wednesday, while the Lions (5-1, 1-1 ECC) improve to .500 in league play with the win.
Bady went 4-for-8 from the field and added three assists and three steals. Junior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) finished with six points, seven rebounds and four steals, while sophomore Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) contributed six points and three rebounds. Sophomore Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) and freshman Holly Sanders (Chicago, Ill./Simeon Career Academy) both recorded six points.
Molloy was led by Aliyah McDonald who had a game-high-tying 13 points, while Shantana Kanhoye finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Symone Kelly and Kamala Thompson rounded out four Lions scoring in double figures with ten points apiece.
Mercy got off to a strong start scoring the first four points of the game. The Mavericks held a 6-2 lead at the 5:26 mark of the first quarter before the Lions ensued with five straight points to take their first lead of the game at 7-6 with 4:14 left in the quarter. Mercy retook the lead at 10-9 following a Sanders layup at the 2:44 mark, but Molloy ended the quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 20-12 lead after the first quarter.
Keane-Dawes opened the scoring in the second quarter to get the Mavericks within six, 20-14, with 7:53 left before halftime. The Lions scored four unanswered to increase the lead to double digits for the first time at 24-14. Bady followed with a three and a layup to make it a 24-19 contest with 5:31 left before halftime. Molloy would distance themselves from Mercy with a 14-0 run to build a 38-19 lead with 1:05 left in the opening stanza. The Mavericks closed the quarter with five straight points to cut the Molloy lead to, 38-24, at halftime.
Keane-Dawes got Mercy on the board first in the third quarter to trim the Lions lead to 12, 38-26. However, Molloy followed with a 14-2 run to take a 52-28 advantage with 1:23 remaining in the frame. Junior DaMonae Hargrove (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) scored right before the end of the period to make the Lions lead 52-30 heading to the fourth quarter.
The Mavericks cut the deficit to 17, 60-43, after a pair of Bady free throws at the 3:42 mark, but that would be the closest they could get as the Lions came away with the victory.
Mercy shot 31.5 percent (17-for-54) from the floor, 6.3 percent (1-for-16) from downtown and 70.0 percent (14-for-20) from the foul line. Molloy shot 39.4 percent (26-for-66) from the floor, 37.0 percent (10-for-27) from beyond the arc and 50.0 percent (8-for-16) from the charity stripe. Molloy held a 53-33 edge on the boards and a 27-17 advantage in points off turnovers.
