Perez and Clark Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Plays at No. 16 Queens
Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2016) – Sophomore Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) scored a team-high 11 points and junior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) added ten points as the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped an 82-54 decision to No. 16 Queens College in an ECC matchup on Wednesday night at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (1-6, 0-2 ECC) have dropped two games in a row, while the Knights (6-1, 2-0 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play.
Perez added five rebounds and Clark went 5-for-8 from the field. Freshman Caralie Wilson (Gold Coast, Australia/John Paul College) netted eight points and sophomore Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) poured in seven points with a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) also scored seven points and dished out a team-high four assists.
Queens was led by Madison Rowland who recorded a double-double with a game-high 25 points along with ten rebounds. Also, finishing with a double-double was MacKenzie Rowland with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Mercy opened up the scoring in the contest on a Perez layup to take their lone lead of the game. The Knights would show why they are nationally ranked, responding with a 12-2 run to take a 12-4 lead at the 6:18 mark. Wilson followed with a pair of free throws to cut the Queens lead to six, 12-6, but the Knights ended the quarter on a 15-2 run to take a 27-8 lead after one quarter of play.
Queens increased the lead to 20, 39-19, with 5:57 left in the half. The Mavericks followed with a 12-4 run over the next four minutes to get within 12, 43-31, after a Wilson trifecta. Kammikia Barnes drained a three to increase the lead back to 15, 46-31, for the Knights, but Hall would drain a free throw with 34 seconds left in the half to make it 46-32 in favor of Queens at halftime.
Clark began the second half with a jumper to get the Mavericks back within 12, 46-34, but the Knights would respond by making it a 17-point game, 54-37, at the 7:33 mark of the third quarter. A Clark layup put the Queens lead at just 12, 56-44, at the 4:56 mark. The Knights closed out the quarter on an 11-3 run to get the lead back to 20, 67-47, after three quarters.
Queens put the game away in the fourth quarter, scoring the first ten points of the frame to take a 77-47 lead with 7:48 left. The Knights outscored the Mavericks 15-7 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Mercy shot 28.1 percent (16-for-57) from the field, 33.3 percent (4-for-12) from downtown and 72.0 percent (18-for-25) at the foul line. Queens shot 44.2 percent (34-for-77) from the floor, 35.7 percent (10-for-28) from beyond the arc and 40.0 percent (4-for-10) from the charity stripe. The Knights owned a 59-31 edge on the glass and a 22-9 advantage on the offensive glass, which they parlayed into a 23-4 edge in second chance points. Queens also held a 19-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
