Four Score in Double Figures as Men's Basketball Visits Queens in ECC Opener
Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2016) – Four different Mavericks scored in double figures as the Mercy College men's basketball team suffered a 93-73 setback to Queens College in their ECC opener on Wednesday night at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (1-7, 0-1 ECC) drop their sixth straight game, while the Knights (4-3, 2-0 ECC) move over .500 on the year.
Senior William Robinson (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nyack College) led Mercy with a team-high 14 points on 6-for-13 shooting. Graduate student Ryan Hickey (Smithtown, N.Y./Dowling College) added 12 points and five rebounds and junior Jefferson Francois (New York, N.Y./Hostos CC) recorded his first double-double as a Maverick with 11 points and ten rebounds. Senior Isaiah Cosbert (Queens, N.Y./Sullivan CC) rounded out four Mavericks scoring in double figures with ten points.
Queens was paced by Tyrone Hall who put up a game-high 28 points on 10-for-15 shooting. Tyree White contributed a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead early on before Mercy clawed their way back and took a game-high five-point lead, 12-7, at the 13:43 mark of the first half after a Marko Kozul (Astoria, N.Y./Felician University) jumper. The Mavericks held a 20-18 lead after a Raphael Jennings (Washington, D.C./ASA College) layup with 9:39 left in the opening half before Queens responded with an 8-2 run to retake the lead at 26-22 with just over five minutes left in the frame.
Freshman Daniel Kissoon (Jamaica, N.Y./Springfield Gardens) answered with a triple to get Mercy within one, 26-25, but the Knights ended the half on a 16-8 run to take a 42-33 lead into halftime.
Robinson opened the second stanza with a layup to trim the Queens lead to seven, 42-35. However, the Knights increased the lead to 11, 51-40, with 17:05 left after a White three-point play. Mercy battled their way back and tied the score up at 61-61 with 8:49 remaining after back-to-back jumpers from Jennings and Robinson, capping a 21-10 run.
Queens quickly followed with seven straight points to get the lead back at 68-61 with 7:15 on the clock. Robinson's layup at the 4:30 mark made it 76-70 in favor of the Knights, but Queens would end the game on a 17-3 run to earn the victory as the Mavericks went nearly four minutes without a field goal down the stretch.
Mercy shot 37.5 percent (27-for-72) from the floor, 22.2 percent (4-for-18) from downtown and 71.4 percent (15-for-21) from the foul line. Queens shot 52.4 percent (33-for-63) from the field, 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from beyond the arc and 78.3 percent (18-for-23) from the charity stripe. The Knights held a 43-34 edge on the glass, while the Mavericks maintained a 14-7 advantage in points off turnovers.
