Hall Scores Season-High 19 Points as Women's Basketball Hosts LIU Post
Box Score VALHALLA, N.Y. (Dec. 14, 2016) – Despite 19 points and five rebounds from sophomore Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y. / Keystone College), the Mercy College women's basketball team fell, 78-64, to ECC foe LIU Post on Wednesday night at Westchester Community College.
The Mavericks (1-8, 0-4 ECC) drop their fourth straight contest, while the Pioneers (5-5, 3-1 ECC) are now .500 for the season.
Hall led the Mavericks with 19 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Midwood) added 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block. Another standout player for the Mavericks was junior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill), who also added 13 points and three rebounds. Rounding out four Mavericks scoring in double figures was freshman Holly Sanders (Chicago, Ill./Simeon Career Academy) who had 12 points and five assists.
Mikaiya Moore led the Pioneers, scoring a game high 23 points, grabbing five rebounds, and dishing out one assist. Sasha Patterson led the defense with nine rebounds for LIU Post.
The Mavericks held a close battle in the first quarter with Keane-Dawes scoring six of her 13 points in this quarter. The Pioneers and the Mavericks were tied on five separate occasions throughout the quarter. LIU Post entered the second quarter with a 21-16 advantage.
The second quarter saw the closest battle of the game with the Mavericks scoring a total of 13 points compared to the Pioneers twelve. Leading the Mavericks offensively for the second quarter was Clark, who went 3-3 from the charity stripe and finished the quarter with seven points and two rebounds. The Mavericks entered halftime trailing 33-29.
The Pioneers were the first to score after the intermission when Moore started off the quarter with a successful layup. Clark quickly answered back just 16 seconds later when she was able to get the Mavericks on the board in the third quarter off of a dish from Hall. The Pioneers would go on a seven-point tear until they were stopped by four consecutive free throws from Hall and Keane-Dawes to get the Mavericks back in the scoring lane. The Mavericks continued to fight, but entered the final quarter trailing 54-44.
Hall exploded in the fourth quarter for the Mavericks, scoring 11 of her 19 points in the game in the final ten minutes. However, it was not enough as Mercy fell to LIU Post with a final score of 78-64.
Mercy shot 33.3 percent (17-of-51) from the floor, 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from downtown and 86.2 percent (25-of-29) from the charity stripe. LIU Post shot 46.0 percent (29-of-63) from the floor, 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from beyond the arc and 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the foul line. The Pioneers held a 46-31 edge on the glass and a 23-7 advantage in second chance points.
Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks will look to get back in the win column as travel to Division I United States Military Academy on Saturday, Dec. 17 for a game at Christl Arena in West Point, NY. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
