Clark Scores Team-High 12 Points as Women's Basketball Plays at Division I Army
Box Score WEST POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 17, 2016) – Despite a team-high 12 points from junior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 90-48 decision to Division I Army West Point on Saturday afternoon at Christl Arena.
The Mavericks (1-9) have dropped five games in a row, while the Black Knights (9-2) have won two games in a row. Today's game was Mercy's first against a Division I opponent in a regular season contest since December 30, 2007 when they played at North Carolina Central University. Today's contest was the 15th all-time meeting between the two schools with the last coming during the 1989-90 season.
Clark also recorded seven rebounds and went 4-of-11 from the field. Junior Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn./Saint Bernard) added nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from downtown and junior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) netted nine points. Freshman Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) contributed eight points and four rebounds on 4-of-6 shooting.
Army was led by Madison Hovren who had a game-high 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Morgann Yancey and Destinee Morris both chipped in 12 points.
The Black Knights opened the scoring on a Hovren layup to take an early 2-0 lead before Collier responded on the next possession with a layup to even things up at 2-2 less than a minute in. Army would then go on a 30-4 run to close the out quarter, taking a 32-6 lead into the second stanza.
Army opened up the second quarter with five straight points to increase the lead to 37-6 with 8:19 left in the half. Sullivan ended the Black Knights run with a trifecta at the 7:42 mark to make it 37-9. Army would outscore the Mavericks 24-12 in the second quarter to take a 56-18 lead at halftime.
The Black Knights began the second half with the first nine points and outscored Mercy 24-13 in the period to build an 80-31 lead after three quarters of play.
Despite the large deficit entering the fourth quarter, the Mavericks would continue to battle and outscore Army 17-10 in the final quarter as Clark finished with six of her 12 points in the quarter.
Mercy shot 33.9 percent (20-of-59) from the floor, 20.0 percent (4-of-20) from downtown and 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from the foul line. Army shot 50.0 percent (33-of-66) from the field, 61.9 percent (13-of-21) from beyond the arc and 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the foul line. Army held a 46-28 edge on the glass and used 19 Mercy turnovers to hold a 26-7 advantage in points off turnovers.
