Wilson and Perez Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Plays at Bridgeport in ECC Matchup

(Dec. 3, 2016) – Despite a career-high 22 points from freshman Caralie Wilson (Gold Coast, Australia/John Paul College) and a career-high 15 points from sophomore Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 98-63 decision to University of Bridgeport in an ECC matchup at Hubbell Gym on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (1-7, 0-3 ECC) drop their third straight ECC game, while the Purple Knights (6-1, 2-0 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play.
Wilson went 7-for-15 from downtown, while Perez went 5-for-11 from the field. Sophomore Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) and junior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) both added six points and five rebounds and freshman Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) contributed six points.
Bridgeport was led by Anastasia Williams who had a team-high-tying 13 points and a game-high 19 rebounds. Also, recording 13 points were Camera Miley and Samnell Vonleh.
In a game that featured a combined 25 three-pointers between the two teams, the Mavericks got off to a strong start as they built a 9-4 lead after a Wilson three at the 8:10 mark of the opening quarter. After three straight points by Bridgeport, Wilson drained another three to increase the Mercy lead back to five, 12-7, with 6:35 left in the quarter. The Mavericks held a 17-16 advantage after a Hall trifecta with 2:08 on the clock, but the Purple Knights ended the frame on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good at 26-17 after one quarter.
Bridgeport opened up the second quarter on a 12-0 run to cap a 22-0 run spanning from the first quarter to build a 38-17 advantage with 6:57 left before halftime. Wilson nailed another three at the 4:43 mark to get the Mavericks within 15, 40-25, but the Purple Knight finished off the half with an 11-6 run to take a 51-31 lead at halftime.
Bridgeport outscored Mercy 25-11 in the third quarter to take a 76-42 lead after three quarters and they would lead the rest of the way in securing the victory.
Mercy shot 30.3 percent (23-for-76) from the field, 36.7 percent (11-for-30) from downtown and 42.9 percent (6-for-14) from the foul line. Bridgeport shot 43.8 percent (35-for-80) from the floor, 45.2 percent (14-for-31) from beyond the arc and 82.4 percent (14-for-17) from the free throw line. The Purple Knights held a 62-43 edge on the boards and a 36-18 advantage in points in the paint.
Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, December 14th when they host LIU Post at Westchester Community College at 5:30 p.m.
