Goodson Records 13th Double-Double as Women's Basketball Hosts Roberts Wesleyan
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 11, 2016) – Despite the 13th double-double of the season from senior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y./SUNYIT), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 61-46 decision to Roberts Wesleyan College in an East Coast Conference matchup on Thursday night at Mercy Gymnasium.
With the loss, the Mavericks now fall to 6-16 overall and 3-11 in the East Coast Conference. The Redhawks improve to 19-3 overall and 12-3 in the ECC.
Goodson paced the Mavericks with 12 points, ten rebounds and four blocks. Another key competitor for the Mavericks tonight was freshman Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) who scored 11 points, brought down three rebounds, and also dished out three assists off the bench. Sophomore Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) added eight points and nine rebounds.
Samantha Courtney led the Redhawks offensively and defensively. Courtney ended the night with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds, while adding five blocks.
The first quarter was an even battle between the Redhawks and the Mavericks. Goodson scored the first bucket of the game just 18 seconds into the contest off of an assist from sophomore Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill). Necedah James quickly put the Red Hawks on the board which began a back- and-forth battle. Sophomore Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn./Saint Bernard) sunk a three at the 8:32 mark and James answered back and scored five more points to put Roberts Wesleyan up 8-5 at the 5:55 mark. Mercy came back and ended the quarter on a 5-2 run to even things up at 10-10 after the first.
The Redhawks opened up the second quarter going on a 7-0 scoring streak before Bady was able to break it up by knocking down a three with 6:09 on the clock. With a helper from Bady, Goodson was able to score at the 4:57 mark and execute a three-point play to bring the score to 17-16 in favor the visitors. Mercy took a 20-19 lead following a pair of Bady free throws at the 2:31 mark, but Roberts Wesleyan ended the period on an 8-3 run to take a 27-23 lead into halftime.
Keane-Dawes opened the scoring in the second half with a three to cut the Redhawks lead to one, 27-26, at the 8:46 mark. Roberts Wesleyan responded and increased the lead back to four, 38-34, following a Courtney layup with 4:36 left in the frame. Mercy was able to creep back and even things up at 42-42 late in the period before a pair of Brooke Fields free throws gave the visitors a 44-42 lead after three quarters.
Roberts Wesleyan came out in the fourth quarter and showed why they are among the conference's best teams as they opened the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 52-42 lead with 5:58 remaining. Mercy responded with four unanswered to cut the deficit to six, 52-46, with five minutes left. However, the guests ended the contest on a 9-0 run to complete the victory as the Mavericks could only muster four points in the period.
The Mavericks ended the night shooting 24.6 percent (16-of-65), while Roberts Wesleyan shot 34.5 percent (19-of-55). Mercy held a 47-41 edge on the glass and a 14-3 advantage in bench points.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday, February 13th, as they will host Daemen College at 12:30 p.m.
