MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 19, 2016) – Despite an RBI from juniors Janelle Wade (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and Liza Ueno (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin), the Mercy College softball team opened up its 2016 season in South Carolina with a 10-2 loss to Slippery Rock and a 9-1 defeat to Shippensburg on Friday afternoon.

Ueno went 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI, while senior Amanda Gardiner (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Freshman Joelle Salisbury (Rotterdam, N.Y./Notre Dame/Bishop Gibbons) finished 2-for-5 in her debut and tossed five innings in game two.

Game 1

The opening game of the season for both teams saw a pitcher's duel break out early on as the teams combined for only one run in the first four innings as Slippery Rock held a 1-0 edge going into the top of the fifth.

The Mavericks would take their first lead of the game as Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) opened up the frame with a double to left field before Chelsea Konyar (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) reached on an error that allowed Lloyd to score. Wade would later follow with an RBI groundout to score Konyar, giving Mercy a 2-1 lead. However, the Mavericks could not tack on any more runs in the inning.

Slippery Rock had an answer in their half of the fifth as a two-RBI double from Ashley Samluk with one out put the Rock up 3-2. Slippery Rock added one more in the inning to build a 4-2 advantage after five innings.

After a scoreless sixth inning for the Mavericks, Slippery Rock would end the game in the bottom half of the inning with six runs on seven hits to win via the run-rule.

Game 2

The second game of the day saw Shippensburg get on the board first in the second innings with an RBI groundout before putting up a five-spot in the third inning to take a comfortable 6-0 lead.

Shippensburg added three more runs in the sixth before Ueno produced an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to make it 9-1. However, the Mavericks could not put together any more runs and fell via the run-rule.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume play tomorrow in South Carolina playing at Francis Marion at 11 a.m. before taking on Hillsdale at 5 p.m.
