Box Score 2 FLORENCE, S.C. (Feb. 21, 2016) – Freshman McKaily Cusumano (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) tossed her second complete-game shutout in as many days as the Mercy College softball team picked up a, 2-0, victory over Fairmont State University on Sunday morning before falling to host Francis Marion University, 5-0, at the FMU Softball Stadium.
The Mavericks (2-4) conclude the trip winning two of their last four games, while Fairmont State falls to 1-3 and Francis Marion improves to 8-4.
After tossing a complete-game shutout against Francis Marion yesterday, Cusumano picked up right where she left off as she allowed only two hits and struck out six to pick up the win and improve to 2-0. Sophomore Marlena Marzigliano (Highland Mills, N.Y./Cornwall) finished the opener 3-for-3 with an RBI and junior Janelle Wade (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) ended the first game 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Chelsea Konyar (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) batted 1-for-2 with two runs scored against the Fighting Falcons. Freshman Joelle Salisbury (Rotterdam, N.Y./Notre Dame/Bishop Gibbons) made the start against the Patriots and went the distance but received no run support as the Mavericks were held hitless by Samantha Wroblewski.
Mercy 2, Fairmont State 0
Mercy found themselves in another pitcher's duel in their opening game of the day as the two schools combined for only seven hits.
Cusumano retired the Fairmont State side in order in the first two innings before the Fighting Falcons loaded the bases in the third with one out. However, the freshman got out of the inning as she induced a lineout and a groundout to end the inning and keep the score 0-0.
The Mavericks broke up the scoreless tie in the bottom half of the inning. Konyar reached first on an error to begin the inning and Marzigliano followed with a single to put runners on first and second with one out. Wade ensued with an RBI single down the left field line that scored Konyar to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks would put runners on second and third later in the inning but were unable to tack on an insurance run in the frame.
After Cusumano tossed a pair of hitless innings, Mercy added on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as Konyar singled and was brought home by a Marzigliano RBI triple to left center to make it 2-0 after five innings.
Fairmont State got a runner on base in the seventh but Cusumano stepped up and finished with a pair of strikeouts to give the Mavericks the victory.
Francis Marion 5, Mercy 0
The Mavericks struggled to get their bats going in the second game of the day as they were held hitless by Patriots starter Samantha Wroblewski who finished with seven strikeouts.
After a scoreless first inning, the hosts put a run across in the second inning on an RBI single up the middle to take a 1-0 lead.
Francis Marion tacked on another run in the third to build a 2-0 advantage. Mercy responded in the fourth with a walk by freshman Rebecca Souza (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan), but were unable to move her from first and the score remained 2-0.
The Patriots put the game out of reach in the fifth as they put up three runs on two hits to take a 5-0 lead and held on for the victory.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action in Clermont, Florida on Friday, March 11th.
