Perez Scores Team-High 12 Points as Women's Basketball Visits Bridgeport
Box Score BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Feb. 22, 2016) – Despite a team-high 12 points from freshman Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a, 75-40, decision to the University of Bridgeport in an ECC matchup on Monday night at Hubbell Gym.
The Mavericks (6-20, 3-15 ECC) drop the first of two meetings this week against the Purple Knights (9-17, 7-11 ECC) who snap a two-game losing streak with the win.
Perez went 4-of-9 to lead the way, while senior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y./SUNYIT) finished with eight points and a team-high 15 rebounds. Freshman Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) contributed seven points and six assists.
Bridgeport was paced by Briana Stoddart who posted a game-high 16 points along with six assists.
Mercy came out and jumped to a 6-2 lead following a Goodson jumper at the 4:36 mark of the first quarter. The Purple Knight answered with a 10-1 run of their own to take a 12-7 lead with two minutes left in the frame. The Mavericks closed the quarter on a 4-0 run to trail by one, 12-11, after the first quarter.
Mercy carried over the momentum from the end of the first quarter into the second as they finished off a 10-0 run to take their largest lead of the night, 17-12, following a Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) layup with 5:38 left before halftime. The Mavericks held a 20-15 edge following a Perez triple, but the home team finished off the half on an 11-0 run to take a 26-20 lead at halftime.
Keane-Dawes began the third quarter with a three-point play to get Mercy within three, 26-23, but Bridgeport responded with an 8-0 run to increase the lead to double digits, 34-23, with 5:23 left in the period. A Bady three-point play got the Mavericks back within four, 36-32, at the 3:30 mark, but the Purple Knights capped off the quarter with a 16-5 run to build a 52-37 advantage after three quarters.
Mercy had little answer for the Bridgeport attack in the fourth quarter as the hosts started the period on a 21-0 run to cruise to the victory as the Mavericks could only muster three points in the quarter.
The Mavericks shot 25.0 percent (15-of-60), while the Purple Knights shot 41.7 percent (30-of-72) from the field and 48.0 percent (12-of-25) from downtown. Bridgeport held a 51-40 edge on the boards and a 21-2 advantage in fastbreak points.
