Ten Different Mavericks Record a Goal as No. 15 Men's Lacrosse Defeats Georgian Court, 17-5
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 23, 2016) – Led by ten different Mavericks recording a goal, the No. 15 Mercy College men's lacrosse team defeated Georgian Court University, 17-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (2-0) remain undefeated and move to 2-0 for the fourth straight year, while the Lions (0-2) remain winless in their first varsity season.
Senior Robert Rossi (North Massapequa, N.Y./Adelphi) led all scorers with three goals and an assist, while seniors Bobby McDonough (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) and Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and sophomore Kyle McDonough (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) ended the contest with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Joseph Saltrelli (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Schroeder) and freshman Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) also scored a pair, while freshman Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) capped off the afternoon with a goal and two assists. Junior Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) chipped in a goal and an assist and seniors Connor McLachlan (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) and Ron Paulino (Copaigue, N.Y./Lincoln Memorial University) netted a goal apiece.
Recording a pair of assists were senior Ben Shepherd (Huntington Station, N.Y./Univ. of Tampa), junior Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and sophomore Aaron Wright (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport). Freshman Nick D'Amaro (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South-Manor) went 14-of-16 on faceoffs and finished with a game-high seven ground balls. Senior A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made the start in net and played the first half, making three saves to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Georgian Court was paced by Michael Negrete and Joseph Ramirez who each tallied a pair of goals.
After an impressive season-opening win over American International on Saturday, the Mavericks would pick up where they left off as Rossi netted a pair of goals in the first four minutes of the contest to give Mercy an early 2-0 lead.
Bobby McDonough, who scored five goals in the opener, struck again at the eight minute mark to put the Mavericks up 3-0 before Wilcox netted his second of the year just over a minute later to increase the lead to 4-0. Stockton and MacSpadyen would each net their first of the day in the first quarter to give Mercy a 6-0 advantage after one quarter of play.
The second quarter saw the Lions finally get on the board as Negrete tallied his first of the day at the 12:01 mark to make it 6-1. However, Chillianis followed with the first goal of his career and Stockton netted a man-up goal to give the Mavericks a commanding 8-1 lead midway through the second quarter. Rossi and Chillianis each produced one more goal in the period to put Mercy up 10-1 with two minutes left before the visitors closed the scoring in the quarter with a goal at the 36-second mark to make it 10-2 heading into halftime.
Saltrelli opened up the scoring in the third quarter to make it 11-2, but the Lions responded with two in a row to cut the deficit to 11-4 with 10:38 left in the period. The two teams traded goals before Saltrelli and Kyle McDonough finished off the quarter with goals to make it 14-5 after three quarters.
Mercy once again would hold their opponent scoreless in the fourth quarter and McLachlan, Paulino and Kyle McDonough concluded the scoring on the day for the Mavericks in their impressive win.
The Mavericks outshot the Lions 32-23 and held a 39-32 advantage in groundballs. Mercy went 16-of-25 on faceoffs and was 18-of-22 on clear attempts.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, February 27th at home against No. 6 Lake Erie at 12 p.m.
