Goodson Secures 15th Double-Double as Women's Basketball Visits Dowling
Box Score OAKDALE, N.Y. (Feb. 24, 2016) – Despite the 15th double-double of the season by senior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y./SUNYIT), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a, 57-52, decision to East Coast Conference (ECC) foe Dowling College on Wednesday night at Dowling Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (6-21, 3-16 ECC) fail to sweep the season series, while the Golden Lions (3-22, 3-16 ECC) snap a 16-game losing streak with the win.
Goodson ended the night with 11 points and a season-high 19 rebounds, while freshman Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Junior Paxton Reddington (Holmdel, N.J./Brookdale CC) concluded the night with nine points and six rebounds and sophomore Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) finished the contest with eight points and nine rebounds.
Dowling was paced by Tanna Mohammed who had a game-high 15 points.
Mercy started the contest on a 10-0 run and looked to be well on their way to a season sweep of the Golden Lions as they led 12-4 after the first quarter.
However, Dowling began the second quarter on an 8-0 run to knot the score up at 12-12 with 6:55 left before halftime. Freshman Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) snapped the run with a trifecta on the next possession before the hosts answered with a three of their own to make it 15-15 with 5:25 left in the half. Keane-Dawes nailed a three and Bady connected on a pair of free throws to put the Mavericks up 20-17 with just over four minutes on the clock.
The Golden Lions ensued with a 5-1 run to take a 22-21 advantage with two minutes left before halftime. Mercy had an answer as they closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a 29-22 lead into the break.
Dowling opened the scoring in the second half to cut the Mavericks lead to five, 29-24, but Keane-Dawes answered with a triple to increase the Mercy lead to eight, 32-24, with 8:19 left in the third. The Golden Lions once again answered with a 13-2 run to retake the lead, 37-34, with 4:48 showing on the third quarter clock.
The lead did not last long for Dowling as the Mavericks rallied with an 8-2 run to close the quarter and headed to the final period up 42-39.
A Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) jumper began the scoring in the fourth quarter and gave the Mavericks a 44-39 lead with nine minutes remaining. Mercy held on to a 52-47 advantage with 2:27 remaining following a Goodson free throw and looked to have the game secured.
However, the Mavericks were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest and the Golden Lions concluded the game on a 10-0 run to steal the victory away from Mercy.
The Mavericks shot 27.3 percent (15-of-55) from the floor, while the Golden Lions connected on 30.3 percent (20-of-66) of their attempts. Mercy held a 58-34 edge on the glass and a 12-7 advantage in second chance points.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks look to conclude the season on a high note as they host Bridgeport for Senior Day on Saturday, February 27th at 12 p.m.
