Game 1: Franklin Pierce 9, Mercy 4
After scoring 23 runs in their season opener last night, the Mavericks looked to get their bats going against the Ravens. Following a scoreless first inning by both teams, Mercy got on the board first in the top of the second as Daley drove home junior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) with an RBI single after Mendez had led off the inning with a walk. The Mavericks threatened later in the frame with a runner on third, but Young was gunned down at home attempting to steal to end the inning.
Franklin Pierce responded with a three-spot in the bottom half of the inning as a two-RBI double from Max DiTondo and an RBI single from Justin Brock gave the Ravens a 3-1 lead after two innings.
The two starters would settle down and pitch three consecutive scoreless innings until the Mavericks took their first lead of the game with three runs in the sixth. Sophomore Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Quinnipiac University) singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2. Three batters later Young doubled home freshman Nicholas Chilson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) to make it 3-3. After a wild pitch and a walk, Young came home on a wild pitch to give Mercy a 4-3 lead.
However, Franklin Pierce had an answer as they produced a run on a sacrifice fly to even up the score at 4-4 after six innings of play. The Mavericks went down in order in the seventh before the Ravens took the lead back for good as a two-RBI triple from Matt Burns gave Franklin Pierce a 6-4 advantage after seven innings.
The Ravens added on three more runs in the eighth on a two-run home run and a wild pitch to seal the victory.
Game 2: Franklin Pierce 8, Mercy 1
The Mavericks could not get their bats going in the nightcap as Franklin Pierce starter Anthony Matarazzo went the distance with only one hit allowed and nine strikeouts.
The Ravens got on the board quick as they took a 2-0 lead after the top of the first following an RBI double and single in the frame. Mercy came back with their lone run of the game in the bottom of the second as Palladino drove home junior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y./Ulster County CC) with an RBI single after Fina was hit by a pitch and later stole second.
The Mavericks could not find the equalizer and would not record another hit the rest of the way. The Ravens added on to their lead with four runs in the fifth to make it 6-1 and scored a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to finish off the sweep.
Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks look to bounce back as they face Merrimack College tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Myrtle Beach.
