Hagan Drives in Two Runs as Baseball Faces Merrimack in South Carolina
Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 27, 2016) – Despite a two-RBI day from senior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y./SUNY Binghamton), the Mercy College baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision to Merrimack College on Saturday afternoon in Myrtle Beach.
The Mavericks (1-3) have dropped three straight, while the Warriors (3-0) remain undefeated on the young season.
Hagan went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a double, while junior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y./Ulster County CC) went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Anthony Caminiti (Wantagh, N.Y./St. Mary's) made the start and pitched the first inning with two earned runs allowed to earn the loss.
Merrimack was paced by Sean O'Neill who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Warriors wasted little time in getting their bats going as a leadoff double followed by a single would lead to a double steal that produced a run to make it 1-0. Merrimack later tacked on a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 before an unearned run capped off the scoring in the inning to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead before he Mavericks first at bat.
After a scoreless bottom half of the first for Mercy, Merrimack added on two more runs in the second on two hits to increase the lead to 5-0. The Mavericks would get on the board in the bottom half of the inning as Fina drove home Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) on a sacrifice fly after Mendez led off the inning with a single to make it 5-1.
The teams combined for two scoreless innings before the Warriors plated home a run in the fifth on an RBI single to right to make it 6-1. The Mavericks answered with a pair in the bottom half of the inning as Hagan came through with a two-RBI double that made it 6-3 after five innings.
Mercy loaded the bases in the sixth with two outs but a strikeout would end the threat and keep the score 6-3. Merrimack tacked on two more runs on two hits and an error in the ninth to make it 8-3 and the Mavericks would go down in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks conclude their South Carolina trip with a matchup against Southern New Hampshire tomorrow at 9 a.m.
