Stockton Scores Team-High Four Goals as No. 15 Men's Lacrosse Takes on No. 6 Lake Erie
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 27, 2016) – Despite a team-high four goals from senior Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), the No. 15 Mercy College men's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought, 12-11, decision to No. 6 Lake Erie on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (2-1) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Storm (1-0) open their season up with a victory.
Stockton also added an assist and a groundball, while senior Robert Rossi (North Massapequa, N.Y./Adelphi) netted three goals. Freshman Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) ended the contest with two goals, three assists and four groundballs. Junior Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and freshman Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) each produced a goal and junior Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) chipped in three assists. Senior Peter LoParo (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) added three caused turnovers and three groundballs and Bobby Chillianis chipped in four groundballs of his own. Senior A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made the start in net and played the first half, making four saves. Sophomore Michael Schneider (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) played the second half and made six saves in taking the loss.
Lake Erie was paced by Lucas Shafer who had a game-high seven points on five goals and two assists.
Mercy looked to make a statement against a 2015 Final Four participant in Lake Erie and held a late lead in the contest before the visitors scored three unanswered at the end to steal the victory.
The Mavericks got off to a strong start in front of an energetic crowd at Mercy field as Wilcox put Mercy on the board at the 13:33 mark of the first quarter. Lake Erie immediately responded with a tally at the 11:53 mark to even up the score at 1-1.
Goals from Rossi and Chillianis put the Mavericks up 3-1 with 5:49 left in the quarter. However, the Storm closed the period with three straight goals to take a 4-3 advantage after one quarter of play.
The second quarter saw the Storm score the first two goals of the frame to take a 6-3 lead with 13:11 left before halftime. The visitors looked to be running away with the contest, but Mercy did not go down with a fight as Rossi, Stockton and MacSpadyen followed with goals to even up the score at 6-6 with seven minutes left in the half.
The two teams traded goals to make it 7-7 before Stockton scored with five seconds left in the half off a feed from MacSpadyen to give Mercy an 8-7 lead at halftime.
The third quarter saw the defensive intensity pick up with only one goal scored in the quarter. The goal would come at the 4:42 mark as Mitchell Stokes netted a goal for Lake Erie to make it 8-8 heading to the fourth quarter.
Stockton opened the scoring in the fourth to give Mercy a 9-8 lead before Shafer answered with a tally to make it 9-9. MacSpadyen and Stockton added goals at the 12:00 and 5:05 mark to give the Mavericks an 11-9 lead with five minutes left.
Lake Erie came back and showed why they were a final four team a year ago as they responded with two straight goals to even up the score at 11-11 with 1:46 left. The Storm would win the ensuing faceoff and Austin Bishop found the back of the net with 44 seconds left to put Lake Erie up 12-11. The next faceoff would go the Storm who held on for the victory.
Lake Erie held a 32-23 edge in shots, while Mercy maintained a 32-28 advantage in groundballs.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks will look to bounce back as they travel to Saint Rose on Friday, March 4th for a 3 p.m. start.
