McNally Records Game-High Seven Points as Women's Lacrosse Opens 2016 Season With 16-3 Victory Over Holy Family

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 27, 2016) –  Senior Meg McNally (Hillburn, N.Y./Lock Haven Univ.) helped lead the Mercy College women's lacrosse team to a 16-3 victory to kick off the 2016 season with a game-high-tying four goals and three assists against visiting Holy Family University at Mercy Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks improve to 1-0 on the year, while the Tigers fall to 0-1.

McNally led the Mavericks with four goals on four shots, three assists, and two ground balls. Another stand out Maverick was junior Alexa Haines (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), who scored four goals and dished out one assist. Junior Tori DiFusco (Mahopac, N.Y./SUNY Cortland) and sophomore Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) both achieved a hat-trick in today's contest. The final Maverick to score was freshman Sarah Koehler (West Sayville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) who contributed two goals and two assists in the victory.

For the Lions, Nicole Braungart led the way with one goal and one assist. Devon Felix and Paige Settar both added one goal. 

Mercy dominated the game offensively from start-to-finish. Davidson started off the first half strong as she scored the first goal of the game at the 21:01 mark. DiFusco was not far behind, adding a goal for the Mavericks at the 20:06 mark. It would be McNally who would bring the score to 3-0 at the 16:09 mark when she scored off of an assist from sophomore Emily Jehle (Wading River, N.Y./Riverhead) on a man-down situation.

Haines would score the first of three goals scored in the next minute, when she capitalized off of an assist from Koehler with 14:36 on the clock. Koehler would then add one of her own off of an assist from McNally. McNally would score back-to-back goals starting at the 13:32 mark off of an assist from Haines. With 7:04 left in the first half, Paige Settar would put Holy Family on the board as she scored for the Lions, bringing the score 7-1. McNally achieved her first hat-trick of the season with 2:31 left in the half off of a free position shot. Felix would bring the Lions to two goals when she scored a goal off of an assist by Nicole Braungart. Davidson would be the last to score in the first half with 27 seconds on the clock to bring the score to 9-2 entering halftime.

Haines was able to score first in the second half, when she scored at the 28:21 mark off of a free position shot. Koehler then added another for Mercy off of an assist from McNally. Just six seconds later, Davidson scored her second of the game for the Mavericks. With 22:08 on the clock DiFusco scored off of a free position shot. McNally scored her fourth goal of the game at the 16:11 mark to make it 14-2. DiFusco then completed her hat-trick at the 10:52 mark off of a pass from McNally. Haines was not far behind as she completed her hat-trick with 8:56 left off of an assist from Koehler. Braungart would score the final goal of the game with 4:36 left on the clock. As the second half came to an end, Mercy would earn the 16-3 victory over the Lions.

For the Mavericks, junior Melissa DellaRocca (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) grabbed four ground balls and caused four turnovers. Sophomore Hope Coticchio (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) also grabbed four ground balls and recorded three caused turnovers.  For the Lions, Felix recorded three ground balls and one caused turnover. Ashley Magagna had two ground balls and one caused turnover.

In goal for the Mavericks was junior Jillian Rocco (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) who recorded 11 saves in a full 60:00 mintues of action. In goal for the Lions was Grace Deckert, who saw a total of 49:08 minutes of action and recorded nine saves. Amber Frechette played the remaining time for the Lions.

Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks will return to action when they host Merrimack on Saturday, Mar. 5 at 1:00 p.m.
