Hagan Homers as Baseball Takes on Southern New Hampshire in South Carolina Finale
Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 28, 2016) – Despite a home run from senior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y./SUNY Binghamton) and two RBIs from sophomore John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision to No. 20 Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday morning in Myrtle Beach.
The Mavericks (1-4) return back to New York on a four-game losing streak, while the Penmen (5-0) finish their Myrtle Beach trip undefeated.
Young finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Hagan went 1-for-4 with a home run, run scored and RBI. Senior Justin Palladino (Yonkers, N.Y./Westchester CC), junior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) and sophomores Bryan Torres (Bronx, N.Y./All Hallows) and Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Quinnipiac University) recorded the Mavericks other hits on the day. Junior Oscar Marcial (Manhattan, N.Y./ASA College) made the start on the mound and went the first four innings with five earned runs allowed to take the loss.
Southern New Hampshire was paced by Carson Helms who went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
After a 1-2-3 inning by Mercy, the Penmen broke through with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Helms drove in a run on a sacrifice fly that helped cap an inning that produced two hits.
Southern New Hampshire added on a pair of runs in the bottom of the second as Derek Bauer led off the inning with a solo home run and Sean Webster later drove in a run with an RBI single to make it 3-0. The Penmen added one more run in the frame to take a 4-0 lead after two innings of play.
Young produced the Mavericks first hit of the game in the third, but was left stranded at third to keep the game at 4-0. Mercy finally got on the board in the fourth as Young drove home Palladino and Mendez with a two-RBI single. The inning was started by a Palladino single and was followed by a Mendez walk. Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y./Ulster County CC) sacrificed both over into scoring position and Young delivered to make it 4-2 Penmen.
The momentum was short-lived as Southern New Hampshire answered with two runs in the fourth on two walks, two hit by pitches and a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2 after four innings. The two teams would go scoreless until the Penmen tacked on another run in the sixth to make it 7-2.
Southern New Hampshire scored a run in the seventh to make it 8-2 before Hagan led off the eighth with a solo home run to make it 8-3. Mendez later doubled in the inning but was left stranded. The Penmen concluded the scoring on the day with two runs on three hits in the 8th to put the game out of reach.
