Perez Finishes With a Team-High 12 Points as Women's Basketball Hosts NYIT
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2016) – Despite freshman forward Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) scoring a team-high 12 points, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 73-40 decision to NYIT in an East Coast Conference (ECC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Gymnasium.
The Mavericks now fall to 6-14 and 3-10 in the East Coast Conference. The Bears have improved to 19-5 overall and remain undefeated in the ECC with a 13-0 record.
Perez led the Mavericks offensively, finishing the game with 12 points and six rebounds. Senior forward Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y./SUNYIT) recorded a game-high six blocks, a team-high nine rebounds, and also added seven points. Junior guard Paxton Reddington (Holmdel, N.J./Brookdale CC) contributed eight points for Mercy, going 2-of-3 in three pointers. Freshman Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) dished out four assists, along with a game-high five steals.
For the Bears, Dina Ragab led the squad offensively, scoring a game high 17 points while dishing out three assists and recording two steals. Shannon Duer had a game-high 17 rebounds and also added nine points and two steals. Nina Vukosavljevic dished out a game-high 10 assists for the Bears.
The Mavericks would get off to a slow start as the Bears took a quick 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game. Reddington quickly put Mercy on the board as she made a three point shot at the 6:40 mark off of an assist from Bady. The rest of the quarter would be a back and forth battle between the Bears and the Mavericks. Mercy entered the second quarter trailing by four with a score of 16-12.
Goodson would open up the second quarter with a successful layup just ten seconds into action. The Mavericks were down just three, 23-20, with 5:58 against the top team in the ECC. However, the Bears showed why they are at the top of the league standings as they ended the half on a 13-1 run to take a 36-21 lead into halftime.
The third quarter was the closest quarter in the contest. The Mavericks were able to hold the Bears to scoring 15 points and were able to score 12 points themselves. Perez took control of the Mavericks this quarter, as she scored seven of the 12 points, and Mercy headed into the final quarter down 51-33.
NYIT controlled the fourth quarter and cruised their way to their 14th straight win.
Mercy shot just 21.3 percent (13-of-61) from the floor compared to 39.4 percent (28-of-71) by the visitors. NYIT held a 54-42 edge on the boards and 24-4 edge in points off turnovers.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks will travel to Mansfield University on Tuesday, February 9th at 5:30 p.m.
