Goodson Scores Game-High 20 Points as Women's Basketball Plays at Mansfield
Box Score MANSFIELD, P.A. (Feb. 9, 2016) – Despite a game-high 20 points from senior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y./SUNYIT), the Mercy College women's basketball team fell, 68-57, to Mansfield University on Tuesday evening at First Citizens Community Bank Court at Decker Gymnasium.
The Mavericks are now 6-15, while the Mounties rise to 6-15 overall.
Defensively, Goodson had six rebounds, three blocks, and two steals. Another key competitor for the Mavericks was freshman Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis), who finished the night with nine points, six steals, five rebounds, and one assist.
For Mansfield, Katie Fitzpatrick recorded a triple-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Becky Evans was also a key contributor for the Mounties, scoring 14 points while adding five assists and three rebounds.
The Mavericks entered tonight's contest fired up. Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) started off the scoring for Mercy as she made a layup at the 9:37 mark to open the game. Goodson quickly joined in on the scoring after Bady was able to steal the ball from the Mounties. The Mavericks were able to capitalize on many opportunities in the first quarter, scoring a total of 17 points, with six points from Goodson. The first quarter would come to an end with Mercy holding a 17-9 lead.
Goodson would be the first to score in the second quarter when she made a layup at the 8:13 mark. This would be the start of six unanswered points for the Mavericks. After the Mounties called a 30-second timeout, Mary Rumbaugh was able to sink a three point shot off of an assist from Fitzpatrick. The Mounties would then score six points in the next minute to bring the score to 23-16. Fitzpatrick took control before halftime, scoring seven points in the second quarter. The Mavericks held a 27-21 lead entering halftime.
The Mavericks would fall behind in the third quarter, as the Mounties were able to score 13 unanswered points. Goodson was able to break the hot streak when she made two free-throws at the 3:39 mark. The Mounties continued to excel offensively the remainder of the quarter. Mercy wrapped up the third quarter trailing 52-38.
Junior Paxton Reddington (Holmdel, N.J./Brookdale CC) led the Mavericks in the final quarter, scoring a total of six points. However, it was not enough for Mercy to make a comeback, as the final score came to 68-57.
Mercy shot 33.3 percent (20-of-60) from the floor compared to 44.6 percent (25-of-56) by the Mounties.
Head coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks will look to pick up their fourth conference win as they host Roberts Wesleyan on Thursday, February 11th at 5:00 p.m.
