Five Mavericks score as Women's Lacrosse takes on STAC in first ECC matchup
Box Score With the loss, the Mavericks now fall to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the ECC. STAC will now rise to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
The Mavericks were led by Davidson, who recorded two goals and one assist for three points in the contest. Davidson also registered two draw controls and one ground ball for Mercy. Senior Meg McNally was another key competitor in today's game as she recorded one goal, two ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Freshman Hunter Isnardi ended the game with one ground ball, one draw control, and one caused turnover. Junior Jillian Rocco and junior Shianne Judson split the time evenly in goal, both playing a total of 30:00 minutes. Judson made four saves for the Mavericks while Rocco added one.
For the Spartans, sophomore Caroline Finnen led the pack as she scored three goals off of four shots. Senior Sabrina Prestano and redshirt senior Ruth Pluviose both added two goals for St. Thomas Aquinas. Senior goalie Kaitlyn Lonergan played the full 60:00 minutes and made nine saves.
The first half was a back and forth battle, as STAC got on the board first when Finnen scored her first goal of her hat-trick off of an assist from Pluviose. Mercy was able to answer back quickly as Isnardi was able to score the first goal for the Mavericks at the 20:31 mark, just about a minute after STAC scored their first goal. Davidson would bring the score to 2-1 at the 18:35 mark after scoring off of a free position shot. After a timeout at the 15:02 mark, the Spartans were able to adjust as Pluviose scored bringing the score 2-2. Davidson was able to grab the next draw control to bring the ball into Mercy hands. It was then that freshman Sarah Koehler scored off a free position shot after the Spartans were given a yellow card. Just two minutes later Finnen added her second goal of the game, bringing the score to another tie at 3-3. The Mavericks struggled as the Spartans scored two more unanswered goals, leaving just 2:09 on the clock for the half. With 1:25 left in the first half, Davidson would score off a free position shot to bring the score to 5-4, Mercy trailing by one entering halftime.
Mercy came out hot as just 30 seconds into the first half, Kline causes a turnover for STAC. She then was able to get the ground ball and execute the play, scoring at the 28:15 mark to tie the game up. McNally then added another four minutes later, scoring off a free position shot and giving Mercy the lead. Fifteen minutes of play went by until Finnen completed her hat-trick at the 9:38 mark off of an assist from freshman Courtney Dumain. It would be Pluviose at the 4:55 mark that would seal the game for the Spartans, as she scored off a free position shot to bring the score the 7-6 STAC. The Mavericks were unable to score for the remainder of the game.
Coach Anselmin and the Mavericks will look to get back in the winning column when they host Chestnut Hill on Tuesday, Mar. 15 at 4:00 p.m.
