Torres and Waters Record an RBI as Baseball Hosts Bloomfield
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 16, 2016) – Despite an RBI from sophomore Bryan Torres (Bronx, N.Y./All Hallows) and junior James Waters (Troy, N.Y./Fulton Montgomery CC) along with a quality start on the mound from junior Kenny Costa (Byram, N.J./Sussex County CC), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a, 5-3, decision to Bloomfield College on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-9) fall to 1-1 at home, while the Bears (2-7) snap a six-game losing streak with the win.
Torres finished 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Waters went 1-for-1 with an RBI and run scored. Senior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y./SUNY Binghamton), junior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y./Ulster County CC) and sophomores Nick Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y./North Shore) and Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Quinnipiac University) recorded the Mavericks other four hits. Costa tossed six innings with three earned runs allowed with two strikeouts to take the loss.
Harry Montero led Bloomfield at the plate with a 2-for-4 day with two RBI, while starter Charles Castellano went the first 8 1/3 innings to earn the win. Yordani Nicascio finished off the game to earn the save.
Mercy looked to get back to their winning ways at home and they struck first with a run in the bottom of the third. Daley led off the rally with a double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Torres followed with an RBI single to score Daley and make it 1-0. Torres later moved to third in the inning but was left stranded and the score remained 1-0.
Bloomfield answered with two runs in the fourth on two hits and an error. Costa retired the first two batters before a single by Cristopher Cabral put a runner on first. Isaac Pichardo ensued with a double down the left field line that score Cabral from first to make it 1-1. The Bears added on an unearned run in the next bat as a dropped fly ball led to Pichardo scoring from second to give Bloomfield the lead for good at 2-1.
The Mavericks got a runner on third in the bottom half of the inning, but a flyout ended the threat and kept the score at 2-1. The Bears took advantage in the fifth as Montero drove in a pair on an RBI single to left field to increase the Bloomfield lead to 4-1.
The score remained 4-1 heading to the ninth as Mercy could not figure out Castellano who held the Mavericks to just six hits. After the Bears manufactured a run in the top of the ninth to make it 5-1, Mercy responded with a late rally to make things interesting before falling. Hagan got the rally started with a leadoff double and was moved over to third by John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy). Waters preceded to bring home Hagan with an RBI single to left field to make it 5-2 with one out. Waters would later score on a wild pitch to bring the deficit to two, 5-3, with the tying run in scoring position with two outs. A groundout to third would end the threat and the game.
