DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 19, 2016) – Despite a team-high two goals from junior Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and a team-high three points from freshman Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College), the No. 11 Mercy College men's lacrosse team dropped an, 11-7, decision to East Coast Conference (ECC) foe No. 10 Dowling College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (4-2, 1-1 ECC) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Golden Lions (5-1, 1-1 ECC) pick up their first ECC win of the year.

MacSpadyen finished with a goal, two assists and two groundballs and seniors Robert Rossi (North Massapequa, N.Y./Adelphi) and Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) added a goal and an assist. Junior Richie Morris (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and freshman Nick D'Amaro (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South-Manor) tallied goals and junior Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) chipped in an assist. D'Amaro led the Mavericks with seven groundballs and went 14-of-21 on faceoffs, while senior Danny Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) picked up six groundballs and had two caused turnovers. Rossi and senior Peter LoParo (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) each produced three caused turnovers and sophomore Michael Schneider (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) played the second half in net and made seven saves in a losing effort to fall to 1-2.

Dowling was led by Scott Reece who had four goals and two assists, while Brian White tallied four goals and an assist. Goalie Frank Sommers made the start and went the full 60 minutes with eight saves to pick up the win and improve to 5-1.

In a matchup between two nationally ranked teams, the visitors got on the board first as White struck just over a minute into the game to put the Golden Lions up 1-0. Wilcox responded with an answer at the 6:19 mark of the first quarter on a man-up goal to even the score up at 1-1. D'Amaro won the ensuing faceoff and took the ball down the field and netted his second of the year to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead.

Wilcox came back with his second of the game just under a minute later to make it 3-1, forcing a Dowling timeout. Stockton put Mercy up 4-1 off a pass from MacSpadyen with 4:19 left in the first quarter. The Mavericks looked to be cruising along as they held a 4-1 advantage after the first quarter of play.

The second quarter proved to be all Dowling as they scored all three goals in the quarter to even up the score at 4-4 heading into halftime with all the momentum.

The momentum carried over for the Golden Lions into the third quarter as they scored all five goals in the frame to take a commanding a 9-4 lead after three quarters of play. MacSpadyen opened up the fourth quarter with a goal to break the Dowling run and make it 9-5. The Mavericks momentum would be short-lived as the Golden Lions responded with a man-up goal to build a 10-5 lead with 7:52 left.

Morris tallied a goal at the 5:17 mark to make it 10-6 before Reece concluded the scoring for Dowling with a tally at the 3:46 mark to make it 11-6. Rossi netted a goal just under a minute later off a pass from Speicher, but it proved too little too late for the Mavericks to overcome the deficit.

Dowling held a 31-29 edge in shots, while the two teams both recorded 32 groundballs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 26th at home against District of Columbia at 1 p.m.
