Joelle Salisbury Homers as Softball Plays at Queens

Box Score 2 FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 24, 2016) - Despite a home run from freshman Joelle Salisbury (Rotterdam, N.Y./Notre Dame/Bishop Gibbons) and a complete game from freshman McKaily Cusumano (Monroe, Mich./Monroe), the Mercy College softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Queens College in game one of an ECC doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. Game two of the doubleheader was suspended after ten innings due to darkness with the score tied at 4-4. The two teams will resume the game on Sunday, April 10th prior to the teams' scheduled doubleheader at Smith Field.
The Mavericks are now 7-8 overall and 2-1 in the ECC, while the Knights improve to 3-7 and 1-2 in the ECC.
Salisbury scored the first and lone run for the Mavericks in the game, when in the top of the second inning she blasted a solo home run to right center field to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, in the bottom of the sixth Queens was able to come together and score two runs off of RBI from Kristen Boody and Deanna Burbridge. The Mavericks were unable to score in the top of the seventh, resulting in the Mavericks falling 2-1.
Cusumano struck out four batters and allowed five hits in six innings of throwing. Junior Liza Ueno (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) was able to record two hits for the Mavericks, as Salisbury, senior Milana Gilaga (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial), and freshman Rebecca Souza (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) all added one hit for Mercy. ToniMarie Valeriano pitched all seven innings for the Knights.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks will host their home opener against the Chestnut Hill Griffins in a doubleheader on Friday, Mar. 25 at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
