Gardiner and Lloyd lead the Mavericks to sweep over Goldey-Beacom with four RBI a piece

The Mavericks will improve to 14–11 overall. The Lightning fall to 5-17.

Game 1: Mercy 8, Goldey-Beacom 2

Gardiner was strong at the plate in game one, recording three RBI along with three hits and two runs. Junior Julie Gross also added three RBI for the Mavericks and had three hits.

The Mavericks would begin scoring in the top of the third inning when Gardiner hit her first RBI of the day, allowing junior Janelle Wade to score the first run of the game. Next up, Gross added an RBI when she advanced freshman Joelle Salisbury to second, bringing Gardiner to the plate.

Junior Paulynn Mao would keep the Lighting alive when she blasted a triple, bringing freshman Shelby Murphy in for the run to make the score 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

The Mavericks were up next and would score a total of three runs in the top of the fifth inning, essentially securing the win. Sophomore Marlena Marzigliano, Gardiner, and J. Salisbury would score for Mercy. The scoring was not over for Mercy, as they were able to hold the Lighting off and pick up another two runs in the sixth and seventh inning when Marzigliano and freshman Marisa Miano both added a run.

Freshman Rachel Davis would try and bring the Lightning back in the bottom of the seventh inning when she doubled, advancing sophomore Kelsey Brandle to third base and bringing sophomore Jordan Donovan in for the run. However, it was not enough as the Lighting fell 8-2 to the Mavericks.

Junior Jackie Kielty pitched a full seven innings for the Mavericks and struck out a game high eight batters. Sophomore Natalie Mickles and freshman Alexa Calareso shared the mound for the Lightning and struck out a combined three batters.

Game 2: Mercy 7, Goldey-Beacom 4

Lloyd led the Mavericks in game two with four RBI off of two triples in the top of the third and the top of the sixth inning.  

The Mavericks were once again the first to score in game two when junior Katiana Golino had her first RBI of the contest, when she singled to allow Cusumano to score. Mercy was able to hold the Lightning to no runs for the remainder of the inning.

When Mercy stepped up to the plate in the top of the third, Lloyd hit her first triple of the game, bringing in freshman Rebecca Souza and Wade. Next, Cusumano added a double for the Mavericks, allowing Lloyd to score. The Mavericks wrapped up the top of the third inning with a 4-0 lead.

The Lighting got hot in the bottom of the third inning, scoring all four of their runs in this time. First to hit was sophomore Lauren Conway, who tripled to right field for a 2 run RBI, allowing junior Ryann Farley and freshman Alexa Calareso to score. The second triple of the inning would come from Murphy, who brought Conway in for the Lighting. Next, senior Alivia Schoff was able to advance on a fielding error, allowing Murphy to score unearned and tie the score 4-4 at the end of the third inning.

The Mavericks would secure the win in the fifth and sixth inning when Golino flied out to left field, bringing Cusumano home for the Mavericks. Lloyd would come in clutch in the top of the sixth inning when she tripled to left field for a 2 run RBI, securing the sweep for the Mavericks.

Freshman Kaylee Stevens pitched all five innings for the Mavericks, striking out three batters. Three separate pitchers saw the mound for the Lightning. Freshman Alexa Calareso pitched a team-high 3.0 innings and was given the loss.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume play tomorrow as they travel to St. Thomas Aquinas in an ECC doubleheader. Game times are set for 12:00 and 2:00 pm.
