Power hitting from Gilaga leads Mercy to split with Felician Unversity

Game 1: Felician 5, Mercy 4
Freshman Joelle Salisbury led the Mavericks in game one, going 2-for-4 at the plate along with pitching a full seven innings. Salisbury drove in two runs for the Mavericks, hitting a home run in the top of the first inning.
The opener saw the Mavericks jump on an early lead with three runs scored in the top of the first, Sophomore Marlena Marzigliano got the Mavericks on the board first. Salisbury then blasted her two run home run to left field, bringing in freshman Kaylee Stevens to bring the Mavericks lead to 3-0.
The Golden Eagles were up next, as freshman Brynne Bauman's single to right center allowed freshman Zeaenna Brackett to score, putting Felician on the board. The game would remain scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, Brackett then doubled to left center field, allowing freshman Ashley Cusicanqui to score for the Golden Eagles. Sophomore Jeannette Roldan would tie the game up by scoring on an error by the Mavericks.
The game would remain scoreless until the top of the ninth inning. The Mavericks would take the lead when senior Milana Gilaga singled out to left field, bringing sophomore Chelsea Konyar in for the run. However, the Golden Eagles were able to earn the win in the bottom of the ninth, scoring two runs off of errors.
In the circle for the Mavericks was J. Salisbury, who pitched a total of seven innings and striking out a game-high seven batters. Freshman Erin Powers pitched a full nine innings for the Golden Eagles, striking out three.
Game 2: Mercy 3, Felician 1
The Golden Eagles were the first to score in game two after Bauman was able to double to left center field, bringing in Lopez to score the first run of the game. The Mavericks quickly answered back next time at bat, as Gilaga signed to the catcher, bringing junior Katiana Golino in to score for the Mavericks.
The game would remain tied 1-1 until the top of the fourth inning, when Mercy was able to score two runs. The scoring began when Gilaga singled through the left side, recording her second RBI of the game. The single allowed junior Janelle Wade to score for the Mavericks. Mercy was able to score another run in the top of the fourth inning when junior Julie Gross flied out to right field, bringing Marzigliano home. The Mavericks wrapped up the fourth inning with a 3-1 lead.
The Mavericks were able to hold their lead for the next three innings. Earning them the split against the Golden Eagles in the doubleheader.
In the circle for the Mavericks was freshman Kaylee Stevens. She pitched a full seven innings and struck out three batters. For Felician, junior Dyonna Pagliocca also pitched a full seven innings, striking out five.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Dowling College for an ECC doubleheader at 12:30 p.m.
